solidsmooky: Yeah I tried all these and it won't work. :( I just sent an email asking for a refund. I'll buy it again when it works.

DosFreak: Most likely the 8bit color issue with Vista/7.
Only "fix" right now is to end explorer.exe before starting the game.

The End-Explorer trick works for me, but nothing else has so far. I can't get any 3D acceleration to work yet either. But killing explorer.exe with a batch file lets me play in software mode.
Try DgVoodoo
Zeckensack
NGlide
In that order. Also for DgVoodoo try different DirectX modes. The first 2 are lights years beyond OpenGlide, I only use OpenGlide as a last resort.

Got a link for the best place to get the DgVoodoo? The page I keep running across with google keeps throwing up warnings and attack attempts with my ESET Security, so hesitant to download from that site. Thanks
How do you get it in software mode?

I read that killing your explorer.exe every time is a bad idea, not only that. I DID try it and it still didn't work. Gog hasn't responded to my email for a refund either :( I don't want to lose faith, come on gog :(

From what I've read elsewhere on the forums, GOG doesn't do refunds.
I see you also have a Radeon card. Did you try rolling back to older drivers? I'm using Catalyst 09.7 and it's working.

heh killing explorer.exe has pretty much been necessary since NT4 to fix alot of bugginess exhibited by explorer. Explorer.exe is basically just MS's version of a file explorer, you can even switch this out in the registry to use another file manager if you want on booting windows.
For what it's worth, the glide option already uses the DgVoodoo wrapper, however if you drop the dgvoodoo setup in your I76 directory you can configure it to up the resolution and tweak some parameters. Now I need to slow the game down because it runs too fast and all the cars are hippity hoppity

They don't do refunds.
Anyways, I have an ATI4850, and I cannot get it running at all in any glide mode. Software mode works, as long as, I don't mess with any of the display settings.
Check out the collective fix thread. Basically, you need two things:
1. An atiumdag.dll from an older Catalyst (I used 9.5, but 9.7 is reported to work as well). If you want to be sure, don't download it from unofficial sources, but download the official drivers from ati.amd.com. Extract the setup file (I used 7-zip). Locate the atiumdag.dl_ file, then in the command line use "extract atiumdag.dl_ atiumdag.dll". Copy the atiumdag.dll to your game directory (where i76.exe / nitro.exe is)
2. A better glide wrapper. dgVoodo >= 1.5 definitely works and gives me 1600x1200 on a Radeon 38700 (with Catalyst 10.2 and the 9.5 atiumdag.dell, just to mention it).
3. To get rid of the black background etc. under Vista (and 7) you need to kill the windows shell (explorer.exe). There's a batch out here. Basically, you can also just open cmd.exe, go to the game directory, type "taskkill /f /im explorer.exe"[ENTER] "i76 -glide"[ENTER]. When you're done, just type "explorer"[ENTER].
Enjoy.

:-( ... They need to patch it or something. No way I'm going under the hood for playing it.

Yeah, they don't care.
This was the first game I bought from Gog.com. And the last.
Untested game with many problems, and no support for customers. Thanks a lot.

Depends on who "they" are. The "failed to initialize hardware renderer" is obviously an AMD/ATI problem. Once you get that working, the game works with the "-glide" switch, so GOG's job is mostly done here.
I'm not sure whether there's any other fix than killing the shell under vista/w7, as simply disabling designs/aero in compatibility settings doesn't fix it. This would be something for M$ to put into their app compatibility settings, I think.
GOG could install the batch somewhere, but under XP it's not such a great idea to kill the shell, as opposed to the never systems.
