I've installed the game a number of times now and every time I get to the main menu but when I try to start a new game it crashes.

I then tried deleting the temp folder in the game directory and now I can create a party but after the prologue text I'm greeted with a paused game screen with the message "Paused for chapter text" at the bottom of the screen and I can't unpause.

Has anyone had any similar issues?
I just installed as well. I'd get to the create game, try to launch and game would crash. Tried running it as administrator and it seems to be working fine now.
@ dcwoomer you sir are a saint.

Sweet, that worked. Thank you :)
Cool. I had the same problem. Thanks for the tip.
Hey guys. I'm a bit confused. I'm having a similar problem: as Drongo described, I can get to the main menu, but once I try to create a new game (single player - the only option) the screen gets dark like it wants to start, but instead freezes/crashes. My account profile on Windows Vista is an "administrator" and I have right clicked and told the comp to "run as an administrator." I still have this problem.
Try setting it to run in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode.

Well, first of all, my Windows XP compatibility mode only goes up to SP2. There is no SP3 option. And second of all, setting it to SP2 does nothing. Problem persists. My comp has been compatible with most of gog's releases. Have no idea why I'm having problems now. Son of a B. Seriously. Been waiting for Icewind Dale for God knows how long.
Running it as administrator fixed it to where i can run it on single player but, if i try to play it on any multiplayer option it still crashes. anyone know how to fix this?

You have to run the game in windowed to get multiplayer working.

Yeah, I've noticed that all of the Infinity Engine games work better on Windows 7 if they're windowed. Thankfully, they still look good.
sorry for repeating myself again and again:

although I marvel the attempt of the gog-Duders to make good old games work on 64-bit systems, I highly recommend to play these games on a 32-bit OS.

If you're dedicated enough to want to play these classics, it should not be hard to re-install one of your old Windows versions from a CD you still have somewhere.

Saves you a major amount of DirectX or driver issues. Running as Administrator is a must for most of these old gems, as mentioned above. Have fun.

Did you install the game as administrator and where did you install it? I know that if you don't install the game as administrator and you put it in the program files directory then you may have...'issues'.
I'm having more or less the same problems, the game continually crashes or hangs before even managing to play. I actually got it to work for a moment when I had a routine graphics card error and had to restart, and I haven't been able to get it to work since.

BG 1 and Planescape work fine, if that info helps. :(
