Would you like to buy/play IWD3, since IWD2EE is most probably unlikely to happen? Ruleset doesn't matter to me, I enjoyed both BG2 and IWD2, but I prefer 3rd edition, though.

I know lot of you guys enjoy 2nd edition more than 3rd, but D&D franchise/CEO are only interested in games using new ruleset (i.e. no 2nd edition game ever, unless it's another BG game, like BG SOD). .... so there is no chance IWD3 using 2nd edition.

EDIT: I meant IWD3.

I personally prefer 3.5 over 2nd, but I still like 2nd edition rules. There isn't going to be a n IWD 3. The only folks who might be willing to take the task is Beamdog, but they clearly aren't aware of their limitations.
Beamdog get too much hate IMO; I actually liked the Enhanced Editions (although I haven't tried SOD, so I haven't really seen their take on full expansion content yet).

I think part of the issue is the previously set bar phenomenon - they took on the task of revamping some of the most beloved games in RPG history, so even what would in isolatio probably be seen as decent or even pretty good content gets boos from a vocal sector of the community because it's not seen as reaching the same standard that had been previously reached.

This actually probably happens a lot when something reaches a high point, Ultima VIII being probably the most famous other example (it's actually a pretty good game taken on its own, but people's expectations were fueled by the Ultima VII duology which was one of the best pairs of CRPGs ever made, so disappointment reigned among many). Ultima IX, mind you, was much more justly crucified (it's not quite the RPG equivalent to Big Rigs Over the Road Racing, but it was very plainly not ready for release, whether or not EA had issued an ultimatum), but I don't think Beamdog has done anything quite that poor (yes, they tend to have a lot of bugs at release, but that seems to be pretty much every AAA game in this era of easy post-release patching and release schedules tending to be given far more importance than whether the product is ready - also in the case of BG1EE in particular, they had a lot of work to do, even community mods to play BG1 in the BG2 engine had frequent showstopper bugs due to the engine changes).

Personally I would probably buy an IWD3 if it came out.
Regarding Beamdog:
They get criticized, because they tried to fix what's not broken and break it in the process. Additionally, they alienated the community themselves by calling the original game sexist and those that criticized them bigots. If that was not enough they removed the originals from GOG.

I personally don't like Beamdog for all of this, especially for BG:EE that I even gave a fair chance. BG should remain with BG engine, BG2 engine ruins the whole game.

Regarding IWD3:
I don't think there's a chance for another IWD, not with the same title at least. Beamdog would fail yet again, besides I think that the Infinity engine wouldn't be that great (those BG2 character animations were terrible at the game's release, moreso now). Maybe something in the vein of Pillars of Eternity, where you can create your own party, but more combat focused?
A new IWD game would have to be in 5th edition rules. WOTC has a policy about any new d&d game has to follow the current set of rules.

SOD got away with using the 2ed rules because it was a middle chapter in a 2ed series.

A 5th ed IWD game would also mean the game would have to be set 500 years or so after the other games. Given that the changes caused by 5ed is tied to an event that happens in the Forgotten Realms. The magic gets changed etc.

I bet you Beamdog is working on BG3 right now, using the 5ed rules. If any character from BG1 or 2 shows up in it it would be a gigantic plot-hole. Most of the NPCs in that game are dead 500 years later, after all. If Imoen and co shows up in a game that uses the 5ed rules it would be dumb as hell. Magic being what it is in the game because of something that will happen in 500 years. Might as well add cellphones to Sid Meier's Pirates because "current".
If it's made those uncreative asshats over at Beamturd? No. Absolutely not.

I hope you are wrong on all those counts, but fear and expect you are right. It follows a clear pattern of idiotic decisions and complete lack of self-awareness by these clowns.

No it is WOTC policy. NWN and IWD2 were made when 3ed was current. NWN2 and Temple of Elemental Evil came out when 3.5 was the new ruleset. I think Dragonshard, Daggerdale and the Neverwinter MMO all use the 4ed rules, which were current when those games came out.

Now 5ed is the current one. I believe Legends of the Sword Coast, which came out last year (I think it was) uses 5th edition rules (although a bastardized version of the rules). So a new BG or IWD would be using the 5ed rules.
