So..I'm a complete noob, not only to HOMM 3, but to strategy games period. However, I was swayed by reviews, advice and the GOG promo to take the plunge and buy HOMM3 complete.

I've only played the tutorial and have watched recommended youtube clips (from boredgamergirl) as well as reading the manual (admittedly not from cover to cover) and am finding the gameplay tricky to get to grips with.

For instance:

There are always heroes available to hire. Should I just keep hiring to explore or is there a penalty to pay for having too many?

Continued from above, I figured that the easiest way to get additional troops to my main hero was to have several hired heroes 'en route' but otherwise redundant and keep swapping them as and when troops are available. That's a pretty poor explanation but hope it makes sense.

I've found a grail that claims to provide all kind of goodies if I bring it to a settlement. I did just that and absolutely nothing happened? What am I missing (except a few brain cells)?

I also noted when watching a youtube beginners guide that my hero can learn various magic spells if a) he/she has a spell book and b) he/she has at least basic wisdom. I then checked my hero and he has a) the book ....but not b) any wisdom. However, he does have spells in his spell book. How does that work?

I have soooo many other questions but will shut up for now. I would appreciate any advice as I really want to experience this game as others have - especially a step by step guide where applicable. Thanks.

Usually 3 or 4 total heroes but on a really huge map more.

Yes, use heroes to ferry fresh troops to your main hero. The main hero may have to return to a major castle to upgrade troops if you do not deliver upgraded troops. Look at the build tree in your major city to see how to get some higher level troops available in there.

But you must also spend money on city improvements that will either earn you money or are necessary for building something else, like Blacksmith. You can build one structure per day in a city, but of course you need the gold and resources to keep up the pace.

If find grail, bring it to your largest city and click on the town hall where you build buildings in the city. This will bring up a dialogue to install the grail.

The spell book comes with a few spells. Find the levels of wisdom and also upgrade the mage guild building and there will be lots more spells. Sometimes even the spells you want! Lol! Wisdom level controls the level of spells your hero can use. Mage guild level controls the level of spells available.

Sounds like you are doing fine! Strategy games are all about developing strategies and the only way to do that is to play.

(Somewhere there is a huge compendium of tips, but perhaps someone else can remember where it is?)

Thanks wilebill. You were the one who convinced me to get this game so the pressure's on you to make sure I enjoy it!! :)

Done what you suggested and no option appears regarding the grail when I click on the town hall. I've checked my heroes inventory (on numerous occasions) and he definitely has the grail. I must be missing something obvious but can't fathom it out. Any other ideas?
Ok - tried various things and finally worked it out....I was switching the grail holder as the town hero rather than a visitor. So by exiting and re-entering my main settlement, the prompt appeared to use the grail which I did.

Now everyone is happy (except the enemy NPC whom I crushed!) and the party can begin. Watch those pikemen boogie...
