Mephe: Haven't noticed any bugs myself yet, but you might be right about the autosaves. I normally just turn them off anyway. I'm not sure about the version numbers, but I don't think there should be any differences other than the version number itself.
Strictly speaking, it's not the autosave that has a problem. It's the option to save between campaign maps that is broken in the 3.x version of HoMM3 HD (as of this writing on 09/03/2012). So when the game explicitly asks you after beating a campaign map: "Would you like to save your game?" you can say yes and go through the whole save process... but it fails to ACTUALLY save your game.

It's not a HUGE dealbreaker, but it is something to watch out for.

On the plus side, one of the UI changes new to 3.x that I really like is that when you click on a creature dwelling it's as if the game has pre-clicked the "hire as many as possible" button (the one with the arrows). That's a HUGE click-saver right there.

Ah yeah, that could be a bit of a problem then. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

And yeah, I like that UI change too. Although I'm still getting used to it and keep going to click the button myself, haha.
For autosave you just have to start the usual HEROES3.exe for the final action.
When using the HD mod, my game crashes whenever I select the "Spoils of War" campaign, but it works fine with other campaigns, and that particular campaign also works fine without the HD mod. Is this a known issue? I searched around but didn't really find any answers.

Which version did you use, with which version of HoMM? Always state that kind of information when experiencing problems, it's extremely hard to help otherwise.
The latest version of the HD mod, and HoMM3 I bought from here. I'm on Win7, for the record.
Weird, as I played that campaign fine. I might get a random crash once in a while, but that happens with stock HOMM3 as well.
There were a few updates in September. A few things were improved, but new bugs were also introduced.

Spoils of War crashes for me too, otherwise the mod seems to work okay. It's a shame it doesn't support Heroes Chronicles though.
