antihippie: The game does have a learning curve, and like a lot of older RPGs, they use high level monsters rather than contrived barriers, so you have to be extremely careful where you wander to.

hmm that sounds a lot like a new rpg that just came out in the last months. maybe games are reverting to older styles....yeah wouldn't that be nice.
AVATAR:/_t2 #Q&_^Q&Q#USERNAME:racingfreak92#Q&_^Q&Q#GROUP:4Poor controls and a terrible walking and fighting system. I dont even know if its turn based or real time it seems to just be random crap. Half the time you click to attack it does nothing and then when the enemy attacks you have no option to block. When you try to back up the camera freaks out.
Dont buy this game for any reason

The controls is bad at the start, but once you get used, it's not a big problem.
The game it's real time, and you can move the camera with your mouse.
I liked the game, if i were you, i would listen to Namur advice:
Give it at least one more try and then move on if you still can't enjoy it.

I said the same thing when I played the game a few months ago,but when I got used to the weird controls I fell in love with the game.

Yep, I started playing the game(gothic 1) about a week ago and I didn't have any problems with the controls even though it was my first time playing. I just trained the fighting on scavengers at the start and if you know how to fight, you can pretty much guess how everything else works in the game anyway. so other than fighting theres not much to learn. Learning the basic fighting style of the game took me around 10 minutes.
I'll check out gothic 2 once I've finished gothic 1 but since it apparently has easier controls than gothic 1, I doubt I'll have any problems.
Guessing the thread was just made for trolling though, but just felt like answering anyway.

it is NOT a garbage - I believe it is only a misunderstanding.
Hello racingfreak92,
If I judge by the date of your message, there is low probability that you read this answer.
But as it might help other players, I post it anyway.
You have to know that at the beginning of the game the hero does not know how to wield weapons - like people in real live.
For instance when fighting with a sword, the hits are weak and he needs time to move the sword between two hits.
During the game, he meets NPCs that will teach him how to improve his skills and even to combine the hits.
This means that at the beginning of the game, you have to be very careful on which combat you can afford to engage.
You can block attacks. You have to practice before feeling how to do it efficiently. Hint: it is very difficult to block attacks from animals as they have a fighting type that is somehow "berseck" one.
You also have to know that despite there are many combats in the game, this is a RPG game, this is not a "attack and kill them all" game.

I have been reading the replies. I will reinstall the game and try again since so many people are defending it

Eh? Harder? Nope. There's not many RPG's easier than Oblivion, certainly not Gothic.

No ways is Oblivion harder. I first played G2 when it first came out and now I have just started the gold version and I am finding it freakishly difficult. Games generally have become easier so it a shock sometimes to go back and play an older game. If System shock 2 were made today people would freak out at how difficult it is.

Compared to the Gothic Series, Oblivion is a Fisher-Price Children's RPG with
little challenge at all.
You can go anywhere in the world and not really worry because all the creatures level up with you, which is completely stupid.
Us older gamers started with games like Bard's Tale 1, 2 and 3 where you'd get
slaughtered if you went into a dungeon or area that wasn't your level.
And that's how RPG's SHOULD be.
Not some stupid encounter leveling system that Bethesda uses.
Besides, Oblivion has an extremely short Main Story (If you just follow the Main Quest)
All Bethesda games are extremely short if you follow the main quest.
You can finish Fallout 3 at level 2 in about 30 minutes, I've heard of someone finishing
Morrowind at level 1 by running straight to the last encounter.
So yea, give me an RPG with a challenge.

I had the same frustration, but I liked the atmosphere so much that I had decided to keep trying until I figured out how to fight correctly. It s all about timing. Once you get used to that and the stupid user interface, you will love this game. Also, reading the community reviews convinced me that Gothic 1 might worth it.
I can symphatize with new players to Gothic being bewildered and pissed off about the controls. They are really horrifyingly bad and it's a testament to the overall quality of the game otherwise that it actually "gets away with" having such a snafued control scheme.
And you really should read the manual beforehand. These days the manuals either get thrown away or kept in the case forever since they're garbage, but for this game reading the manual BEFORE you play the game is mandatory. If you don't do this, and you're used to games like Oblivion and the like, you will likely feel raped and/or ripped off about 5 minutes into the game.
To cite the first few paragraphs of the manual:
"At the start of the game don't try to be adventurous. You're just not good enough yet to start fights with most of the creatures you will come across. It's a good idea to head for the Old Camp to get a feel for the game and the controls."
The inventory controls are especially unintuitive and pretty much requires reading the manual to figure out.

I was almost turned off Gothic thanks to the demo (which offered no manual) since I had no Idea how to pick up items or even draw a weapon. Is there a place where the controls are listed somewhere so I can give the demo another shot?
The game seemed very interesting, though.

All controls can be viewed in the in-game options. To pick up items, attack, talk to people, and perform other interactions, you need to hold left Ctrl or left mouse and push up/W (or whatever you have that bound to). This sounds more irritating than it is. Gothic II resolves this by giving the option of using single-key controls for everything.
