The anonymous "pop culture critic" critiqued video games and their portrayal of women, especially the lack of them being the lead character. But surely there are female characters in games that are portrayed well, and some of them are leading their games, right?

What is your favorite female character in video games, and why? Picture about the said character would be appreciated also.

And as this is a giveaway, I shall give one copy of a game that features probably the most well-known female character in gaming. And you need steam for it aswell. The game was made in 2013 and it's my pick for GOTY. Feel free to guess what it might be.

So, post away. I'll let this giveaway run a day or two. Three, maybe.

Good luck.
NOT IN +1

Ada Wong from Resident Evil 6, not only is she a bad ass, she also has the baddest ass ever!

Dunno Probably TR 2013, loved the heck out of it myself and think it really added to the Lara canon :)

Tali'Zorah.

I just like her attitude.
Not in,but +1

And i know what game you are talking about :)
Spoiler!

Need more?
Jade, one of the few female main protagonists with fleshed out character and story without relying on the usual tropes who stars in "Beyond Good and Evil", a game that has been desperately asking for a sequel for the past dozen or so years.
Since the new Tomb Raider? Lara, hands down. They took the sexy away to make her look strong. Me likes. (Not in, by the way. For obvious reasons :-P)

Knights of the Old Republic II had Kreia - powerful, independent, wise. Mother figure, mentor figure, your best friend and worst enemy in one person. Really strong writing.
(and my male characters always end up romancing with Visas Marr - but that's just me :)
Susan from The Cat Lady doesn't fit in any stereotypical 'female lead in a video game' role. She's not so sexy, she's bitter, she does morally ambiguous things, she doesn't get a 'have relationship and is happy ever after' ending. Still, she's a likeable protagonist and she can make you care for her if you get yourself immersed into the story.

A tie between Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark) and April Ryan (The Longest Journey).

I don't really have a favourite, but I immediately think of these two when people talk about girls in games.
Not in, +1, etc.

My favorite female character will always be Konoko, the ass-kicking gun-wielding supercop from Bungie West's (ill-fated) genre-bending brawler/action-shooter Oni. Like Jade, she was a headstrong character who didn't have to resort to appealing to the usual tropes of women in games (revealing desktop pictures notwithstanding).

Towards the end of the game I'll always remember her for her incredibly bad-ass leather jacket; you knew she meant business and wasn't taking any prisoners. It was an interesting contrast to another female protagonist from another game released around the same time, by the same publisher: Julie Strain, from Heavy Metal: FAKK2.

Not in as I don't use Steam, but +1

My favorite female character from a video game... Rayne ! She's a vampire with big tits and a huge blade on each arm. What's not to like?

Also, an honorable mention for Anezka from Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption . I know she's a non-playable character, but she got to me somehow :P
I'm going to pick a female character who sadly doesn't have a picture..... The Sexy Female announcer from Unreal Tournament 2004. The better you performed with your 'gun' the more excited she seemed to get. It really was terribly sexist but I can't help but think about how hilarious that recording booth session was.

If I had to pick a non-sexualized woman though it'd definitely be April from The Longest Journey series. She felt pretty real and came across as natural and not a strained male representation of a woman (plus she was likeable unlike Kate Walker from Syberia.) I still feel she's the best depiction of a realistic lead female character in gaming.

Edit: Please enter me lol.

Samus Aran from the Metroid series. The first female that kicked ass while searching for bounties. I remember the surprise at the end of metroid on nes when the game revealed that Samus was a woman.
