^It's all I could say when I read the post. Also, there was a space sim based on X-COM too, and that it sucked, was there not? Jebus...I think I've just about had it with the gaming industry and this fucking obsession for first person shooters. Good game or not, I'd rather play a thinking game anytime of the day, so fuck them.

As much as I didn't like Fallout 3, credit given where due, this bit is true. It's a watered down RPG, but at least one can still loosely apply the genre to it.
A first person X-COM though? Bollocks.

Easy, the screen goes wobbly and then every character gets a different model for the duration of the effect so the sectoids look like allies and allies like sectoids

Wouldn't you want everyone to look like Sectoids? If it was simply a character swap all you would have to do after a wibbly screen is shoot the humans.

Was referring to the epic disgruntlement of some the old time players and die-hards of Fallout and their strong opinions of Fallout 3, me included.
This bit of sh*t news about X-COM is going to be more or less similar. The old-time players and fans are probably gonna blast the new game even though there's already Enforcer to screw the X-COM name in the past already.

I love how much bitching, whining and idiotic moaning there is in this thread when a lot of you have no real information to go on with this game, other than it's using the Xcom name and it will be set in the first person perspective.
Gues what guys, technology's moved on since the early 1990's! Shock horror! Development teams now have the power to render advanced worlds in the first person perspective if they so wish, I for one welcome the use of the Xcom universe again, I also welcome a new modern approach to what I used to love. So long as the game is faithful to the original series with some interesting tactics, intense action and fun gameplay then I'll have no cause for complaint.

I already said give me an FP and TP game where I can explore my base, build my base, initiate research/purchase weapons, armour and items by talking to NPCs, recruit soldiers, having tactical battles as a shooter where I can directly control all my squadmates or let the AI handle them and also capture aliens back for research then I know I'll enjoy it.
Pull off a Bioshock again for this, e.g. add in some upgradeable items or skills and call it a Strategy Shooter I'll laugh at them. They're messing with one of the BEST games on the PC of all time with nearly unequaled gameplay depth not seen in most other modern games, they had better make it good...

The worst thing is it's been messed with before and the result has always been an Epic Fail. Interceptor and Enforcer while fun didn't sell well and were poorly received by the fans. Both games had little to no connection to the original other than the use of the X-Com name. If the game was going to be a Rainbow Six style tactical shooter then we probably wouldn't be complaining but in all likely hood it will be just Bioshock with an X-Com skin.

Because as we all know, people don't have a right to be angry when they completely strip a genre that made the game a cult classic in the first place.
I'm glad you welcome a first person XCOM, but that doesn't mean you've got the right to an opinion where those on the other end of the spectrum others don't. Talk about being "idiotic" indeed.

They had the power then (there were FPS' on the Amiga!) and they chose to make a radically different style of game. They clearly didn't WANT to make a FPS game.
Now there we agree, IF they're faithful to the series and IF it requires some varied and diverse tactics and gives plenty of options then it has the potential to be really good.
IF, on the other hand, it's COD with sectoids, floaters, reapers & snakemen and a choice between guns that shoot regualr bullets, glowy red bullets or glowy green bullets and has a linear campaign with no choices other than who to shoot first, I suspect you'd probably agree that it does the licence a disservice
Oh and for anyone who might be on the fence about making an FPS out of a different genre, remember C&C Renegade...

This really annoys me, but so what? It isn't like the XCOM name hasn't been dragged through the mud before.
And as for everyone saying "We can't have a first person XCOM": Wait until we know more. As mentioned before, Fallout 3 was still an RPG. It would be quite possible to use an upgrade system to still capture the essence of the XCOMs, if not make an outright clone.
That being said, my hopes are not high. But fortunately, those of us who want an XCOM clone can go play UFO: Extraterrestrials :p

An FPS ? Passing.

This comes as a bit of a surprise…. I really don’t see how they can translate the tactical decision that was present in X-COM to a FPS…
-What will determine the accuracy of the shots? My aiming? To aim at a head shoot and to “miss” because some random stat? Might as well not aim…
- Since we are now a soldier, what happens if we die? Game over? Guess I’ll send a ton of rookies while I sit in the landing craft sipping cappuccinos
- Will our super FBI agent also pilot the crafts that shoot down the UFOs?
- Where is the tension of turn points? Should I try one more auto shoot or save those points to crouch and wait for opportunity fire? Sure the FPS can had its own kind of tensions, but not the X-COM tension.
- Will our FBI agent have the power to purchase new bases outside the USA (gasp!)?
- I can’t wait until the release of the Battle Isle TPS/Platformer…
The UFO series from Altar, although tried to capture those feelings with varying degrees of success during the 3 games, but at least they tried.

So you aim and shoot. The accuracy of your shots are determined by you pointing at the damned target.
So you play the Commander or Squad leader or whatever. It will be different, but so be it.
No reason those can't be cutscenes. Or maybe it can be a minigame. Still options.
Plus, it has been a few years since I played XCOM proper, but I don't recall actually controlling the planes back then either. Just deploy them.
Should I try one more full auto burst, or should I duck behind cover so that my head won't get blasted off?
Should I charge forward, or break off and reload?
Should I strike now, or call my squad over to me?
No reason you wouldn't be able to, although I suggest they would automate that to make a more narrative game. Again, has nothing to do with the FPS, just means a strategic view of some form would be needed (even if it is just a between level menu)
