Also most people seemed to only care about Fallout 3 cause it was made by Bethesda. 2K Marin doesn't have that sort of reputation so...

Andy_Panthro: Thankfully, there are two real alternatives coming out in the next year or so, which I have far more hope for.
Firstly, UFO: Extraterrestrials 2
Secondly, Xenonauts

The 2nd one is out near Xmas time. :)

AHHH UFO:ET was horrible. The modders fixed the game more than devs and they ditched it after a month, no patches after that. They got cleared for a prequel is a shock to me.
Xenonauts though is looking like an attempt to take UFO: Alien invasion and Xenocide projects and copying those but in a retail attempt at the genre. That has promise.

Delixe: If you are not upset about XCOM then you never played or enjoyed X-COM.

But then I thought those "upset" are labelled as nerds.

or as being stuck in the past.

We are, but I see that as a positive thing.
I somehow missed playing X-COM when it originally came out. The first time I played it was about a year ago when I bought the X-COM complete collection off Gamersgate. I thought both the original and Apocalypse were very good games.
So I don't have rose-tinted glasses about the old series and I'm still disappointed with the XCOM game that was announced, because it's a FPS and not a TBS, and because it's made by a relatively unknown studio, which shows that it's not an important project for 2k.
Still, just because it's not the X-COM remake or sequel that I'd have liked to see doesn't automatically mean that the game will be bad. We still don't know enough to make assumptions about how gameplay will turn out.
And since gameplay was about all that matters in this series (the story and setting is nothing special really), there's no reason to rage about the game until we know more, imho.

People are raging for some of the very reasons you stated. Small team using existing assets to make a quick cut and paste cash in. The problem with making an FPS these days is the sheer amount of them now, an FPS has to be spectacularly good to get any attention and instead of that 2K have just slapped the XCOM name on it to gain attention. Which has worked.

One of the main modders for UFO:ET is working with them on ET2. That gives me some hope (I've never played ET, just heard it needs a lot of work).

On the comparison between this and Fallout 3, I expect many people bought it because it was just like Oblivion (and oblivion sold a lot of copies). It provided a similar experience, but set in the Fallout universe.
I know I will never be satisfied until I get a Civilization style continuation of these sorts of series (as in, they add or change some things, but the general style and mechanics of the game remain the same). However, I am in the minority (except around here and it seems places like the codex, NMA and even something awful of all places).
Something I'd like to link to which I forgot about before is this blog post by Shamus Young (those who visit the Escapist will know him for his stuff there).

Couldn't agree more :)

BMan fixed a game for that company for free, but I still have no hope. I played the game, makes me sick to think about how I waited for years for it.

Yep, BMan's mod work made that a fairly solid game. The good news is that it is apparently him who is working with the devs this time around.
This may sound like a repeat, but I want to apologize again for the previous outburst of angst. I don't normally flame others, it's just that when words like "idiotic" or "nerd" are being used against my post, I tend to think of the other party as being equally so, and no less juvenile. Of course, now reflecting back, it's good that there are people holding out hope for this. It might turn out to be a good game, though as I've said it before, not a next generation XCOM game that plays like its predecessor. Nevertheless, I have nothing against those who might genuinely want this to work out.
So again, I just want to say, no hard feelings to anyone here. Don't want to be smashing beer bottles and throwing benches on our first meeting at Poland. Well, unless Weclock comes :P

After the shitstorm last year over the initial details, 2K-Marin have revised and re-released a new demo, with changed play-style.

Details here : http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/866340-xcom-preview-enemy-unknown

Not only were ordinary fans upset at the game’s first showing but so too were the top brass at 2K Games. And since BioShock creator Ken Levine is known to be a fan of the series we assume that he was instrumental in getting the design changed.
mind you, I wouldn't hold my breath too much : Metro is a free newspaper....kinda parochial little thing, too.
Another Enemy Unknown reboot announced.

This time it's even turn-based strategy! Yay!
