timppu: They were all Israeli conscripts, and I would be quite surprised if half of them, especially the girls, could carry a gorilla weighting 7500 Swedish lods. But I bet they could shoot one with their assault rifles, though.
And they rarely serve in combat roles because Israel's experience of pushing women into combat in the 40s was so disastrous. From what I understand they're primarily used in administrative roles or those where strength is not a major part of the job, such as snipers.

Martin Van Creveld, probably the most famous Israeli military historian, has written quite a bit on the subject and once said something along the lines of 'Israel can't put women in combat because we have to take war seriously'.

Lol, had already thought of this scene earlier. It always comes to my mind when equality among genders comes up somewhere. :D

Dashe: I'm all for women in combat, as long as the requirements to get in stay the same and they don't impose a quota that needs to be filled.
Agreed.

Yeah, it's ridiculous how poignant Monthy Python is sometimes.

You know.

I have personal thoughts about it, that basically amount to "It's kinda stupid, but I can really understand the reasoning for no having women on the front lines."

However, in the equality debate, as far as military service is concerned:
Every single woman ever that says "GIVE ME EQUAL RIGHTS!!!!" should go sign up for the draft. Equal rights = equal responsibility ;)

The draft!? Did we just go back in time 40 years and no one told me?

They still make you sign up even though they don't do it(keeping their options open because they still might). I had to sign up when I turned 18

Oh yeah that. Ha Ha! If they think that I would ever pick up a gun and go to war for anyone the government is dimmer than I thought.

As long as you would do so to actually defend your country...

JCD-Bionicman: It's really simple. If a woman successfully meets all the requirements of a direct combat role, you don't deny her. For the ones that don't, nobody is telling you to kiss their asses, you can deny them. Yes, some women aren't capable of fulfilling direct combat roles, that doesn't mean you ban all of them. Some men aren't capable of such fulfillment either.

I'm aware that the "ban on women in combat" has recently been lifted, but there is still lingering ignorant resistance.

Thoughts?
Because female life is more valuable than male life is why. Look at the resources available in the US that are men's only versus women's only. You'd be hard pressed to find any resources being devoted to anything positive involving men.

Plus, we're going to really see how committed women in general are to equality when the changes come up for debate on selective service requiring them to sign up.

It's not about country. It's about human beings. I am not shooting another human being.
If they ever call you just go north to Canada and then illegally immigrate back south. Grab a dream act benefit or whatever it is that gives drivers licenses free college and obamacare to outlanders. Then you can be a new citizen with your fake Canadian name until they call again. Then repeat until eventually you decide Quebec isn't so creepy after all with their mole people warrens of underground malls, compulsively clean streets and weird bilingual signs and just stay in the frozen northlands :)

I was thinking more apex fallacy, personally.
