Pretty much what you said. Bar a few decent ones they seem pretty terrible. It's not so much their writing is bad, but more because they're very focused on just going over the basics of a game and telling you if you should buy it or not. Plus the 6-10 scale annoys me.

romulus16: Can I ask what's your opinion of IGN's reviewers? (Because bar a few they seem terrible to me...)

romulus16: Actually this site had a pretty good review score system ( http://videogamewriters.com/ ) Avoid it, rent it, buy it but then they changed it to a out of 5 star system (but their reviews are still pretty good)
Neat idea! Plus I agree, they do some pretty good review work. The main reason most sites can't really keep going with a non numeric score is because without number ratings they can't get included on Metacritic. Getting on Metacritic is a often huge boost to traffic and also makes it far more likely that a publisher will negotiate with you. So while I wish reviews could just be reviews, I understand why they added the star system.
