I'm curious. Exactly what did Nickelback do to attract the seemingly universal hatred of every inhabintant on the internet? It seems to me that on the internet, it's just cool to hate Nickelback. But why? What did they do?

It's not that I'm an outraged fan or anything. Hell, I like them, not all of their stuff, but I think they've made some good songs. Does anyone know the source of this great animosity towards them?
Yes, I would like to know that too.

Probably uncool for me to say I like a few of their songs.
Nickelback is the perfect storm of mediocrity. You could make a list of all the various reasons that some people don't like generic post-grunge bands, and most of those bands would only cover a few of those reasons. Nickelback is the only single band that manages to cover every last one of them, and even some that wouldn't have been on that list.

And Chad Kroeger.
For me it's just another band that was WAAAAY overplayed on the radio. Even tho their rarely played anymore, I still generally skip their songs whenever they come up.
I despise Nickelback for the same reasons I despise every other band/"artist" on top 40 radio. It's nothing personal :P

Nickelback, Hinder, Theory of a Deadman...etc
All of these bands could tour as each other and nobody would know it if the lights were turned off. It's the most generic and simplistic rock music being played today, and a lot of people just resent it.

Some of you know that I hate Will Wright. I think his games are the sole reason that the PC is no longer a platform for deep, original gaming. When the Sims came out and sold more than every other game combined, it sent a message to the industry: If you want to make money, make games that everyone from your brother to your great-grandmother can play. And ever since, companies aren't willing to put their capital behind projects that take risks.
It's the same with bands like Nickelback. They are unchallenging. Their music is simplistic and unoffensive and it sells well to everyone from metallica fans to Sugarland fans. The biggest record companies aren't signing bands like Radiohead anymore. They are signing Hinder and Theory of a deadman because of Nickelback's success and people like me hate it.

You got a cheap chuckle out of me.

They're one of the staples of things that are popular to hate. It's stopped being a rational decision and just become the standard thing to do. It's like the second and third Matrix movies, which are actually quite decent movies, but fell victim to the anti-hype that lasts to this day.

I'm not sure if I've ever heard a Nickelback song.
I think some people started to hate them when Nickelback was using the same tune for their different songs, like 4 or 5 years ago.

I personally don't hate them, but their productions are pretty mediocre. Usurpers who act like a rock band, or post-grunge like Nmillar said.
Basically, so what? Why such a big deal? If they completely ripped off another band, well, that would be different, but that is ridiculous, it's like saying that Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a rip-off of Tomb Raider 1...

I'm not a huge expert (I've only heard maybe 3 or 4 of their songs), but as far as I can tell their basically just another "grunge" band with simplistic music, phlegm-assisted vocals, and lyrics that could have been written by a horny 12-year-old.
wouldnt say i hate them, just the songs i have heard by them i never cared for them, did have a mate who seemingly loved them but i never understood it, never really spent too long wondering why he did though
