[url=http://www.gog.com/promo/might_magic_universe_2]The Vast Universe of Might and Magic on GOG.com is filled with all-time classics with a 50% discount. If you have anything important to do in coming days, please reschedule, because such favorites as Heroes of Might and Magic III or Might and Magic VI will keep you busy, well, forever. The offer doesn’t last forever but only until next Monday, April 9th at 11.59 p.m. EDT.

Heroes of Might and Magic is probably the most recognizable, acclaimed, and legendary of the whole Might and Magic series. It’s a game that set the standard for turn-based strategies for years to come--one may argue that HoMM created a genre of its own, while every fantasy strategy nowadays will be compared to this amazing series. HoMM is a combination of strategy (many opponents, many castles, many heroes), RPG (gathering experience and leveling), resource management (gathering resources, managing armies) and pure awesome, something between the cracks that makes the game so special. It doesn’t matter whether it's Heroes of Might and Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic II: Gold Edition, Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete, Heroes Chronicles: All Chapters, or Heroes of Might and Magic IV: Complete--each of them is a game so simple to understand and yet so insanely addictive that it will make you want to play “just one more turn” over and over again. If you’ve never played as the Hero, we recommend starting with Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete Edition--the title considered to be iconic to the series, the magnum opus of 3DO. All the HoMM games on GOG.com are only $4.99 this weekend.

If you already own all of these, you can also pick up Heroes of Might and Magic V Bundle, which includes both of the game’s expansions (Hammer of Fate and Tribes of the East) and more than 170 minutes of soundtracks, an official artbook, wallpapers, avatars, design sketches. Pick Heroes of Might and Magic V up for a limited time together with Assassin’s Creed: Director’s Cut Edition on a special introductory sale: buy one, get one free for $19.99.

Might and Magic, on the other hand, is a series of RPG games set in the same universe. From the deepest dungeons to the intrigues of the royal court, lead a band of adventurers on a dangerous journey of amazing depth and intelligence. Develop your characters through an unique skill point system and take part in an epic clash between the Ancients. Gather your forces, forge new alliances and destroy all who oppose you. The fate of the world is in your hands!

Might and Magic 6 pack includes: Might and Magic: Book 1, Might and Magic 2: Gates to Another World, Might and Magic 3: Isles of Terra, Might and Magic 4&5: World of Xeen, bonus adventure Swords of Xeen and Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven. After you’re done, get Might and Magic 7: For Blood and Honor, Might and Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer, and Might and Magic 9 to complete the Mightily Magical experience. If you’ve never played any Might and Magic games, we’d suggest you pick up the 6 pack for $4.99 and start with Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven. All Might and Magic games are 50% off only this weekend.

klaymen: This thread might be good for you:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/heroes_of_might_and_magic_series/best_one_to_start_with

About the campaigns:
Heroes 2 has two campaigns, each about 10 maps, plus a few new from the expansion, but I don't know how long they are.
Heroes 3 and each of expansions has several smaller (~5 maps, give or take) campaigns and some are accessible only before you complete all the other *in the succession*, so starting a campaign after you have finished one, not starting all of them and completing them as you want.
Heroes 4 is similar to Heroes 3, but I find some of them (mainly those from vanilla game) utterly superior to Heroes 3 ones.
Very helpful, thanks! :)

What about Chronicles? Does anyone know how many maps those 8 campaigns have? Is there anything that makes it stand out, storywise or regarding gameplay or difficulty?
"Nice, you own all games from this promo."

:)

Well, I don't own HoMM5...
I get really confused with all the might and magic games. Why couldn't they stick with one name, I have no idea where to start xD

Off the top of my head I think it was 8 scenarios per campaign. So a decent amount all together. Story is good, difficulty is generally a bit lower than Heroes 3. I think it's something that every Heroes 3 fan should have though; so maybe try that one and if you like it pick up Chronicles too?

I'm thinking about doing it the other way around, especially if the difficulty of Chronicles is generally lower (like I wrote in my first post, what put me off while playing other Strategy games was the difficulty, they were hard to get into for a newbie to the genre, even a bit unfair, I think). Am I missing something vital if I play Chronicles before HoMM3?
What the! its as if GOG has read my mind. I wanted to dabble on the might and magic series. Unfortunately I got heroes 1 to 6 but a bit reluctant to try might and magic.

Really love Heroes 3 though. Heck I wished I had that game a long long time ago. I felt that I am too late now but its one heck of a game. I love HoMM 2's art style but it doesnt have a random map generator and that is the only turn off for me

Edit: Curious though, really need an answer for this, Does HoMM 2 really dont have a random map generator? I just need someone to confirm this for me

No kidding. With the release of HoMM V I thought about maybe finally picking up Chronicles and HoMM 4. That's excellent timing then. I'll probably be buying HoMM V as well. I don't care all that much for Assassin's Creed, but it's something to play when I'll be really bored and there's nothing else to play; so not anytime soon, but at least it'll be sort of free. ;)

Don't care at all for Crusaders, and seeing how M&M 9 has a reputation of being utterly broken I'll keep skipping out on it.

Mephe: The Might & Magic RPGs actually came first, and HoMM was a series of strategy games set in their world(s). They feature a lot of the same characters and lore which is really cool. I'd definitely recommend them.

Heroes Chronicles is a set of 8 standalone campaigns for Heroes 3. But they're pretty good, so worth checking out.
Yeah now I vaguely remember about what came first, indeed. Thanks.
Chronicles definitely look interesting, by the way.

I've just checked this out using the GOG copy of HOMM2. HOMM2 does indeed have a map editor, AND can generate random maps as well. I haven't played with it much, but not only does it have a random map generator, there's a bunch of configurable parameters for the random map generator as well. See the attached screenshot for details.

I`m only missing the "good" ones from this one : "CRUSADERS OF MIGHT AND MAGIC" and
"MIGHT AND MAGIC® 9". My OCD says buy buy buy to complete the collection ..... but on the other hand ... it seems that they aren't worth even their weight in fluff ...and I could get a 6$ GOG worthy of that price for the money .... what to do .. what to do :)

If I've never played any of them before and have limited experience with these types of games, which M&M RPG would people suggest I try first?

I think M&M 6 :) Also If you have a lot of time you could try combined 4 & 5 (these parts can be connected in one bigger game - http://www.mobygames.com/game/might-and-magic-clouds-of-xeen)

I have a feeling that this is very common dilemma among GOGers - at least I have the same. lol

Thing is though, for whatever strange reason GOG didn't include a DOSBox wrapper for that one - it's a separate executable - so one would actually have to fire it up using DOSBox manually.
Imo HOMM 2 vs. HOMM 3 is matter of taste. I give them a tie. HOMM 2 does some things better, hero balance for long maps is better than in 3rd imo for not allowing to swap artifacts between heroes or drop down what you pick up.

I prefer HOMM 2 more colorful graphics over overly "oiled" look of HOMM 3. The 3rd has more of everything though, and with pretty good balance. Music in 2nd is slightly better, at least for my taste. I just recently had a blast with both 2 and 3 of the Heroes series - so I had chance to compare them... and they both rock!

Anyways, great campaign GOG! Way to go. Might & Magic games are very good also, though I'vent got in to the first ones yet well, I know VI and VII the best. The only thing I have no clue here is Heroes Chronicles. I just bought M&M 1-9 and HOMM IV (for not having it previously) -- thanks GOG!
Had to mention also that I grew up specifically with HOMM 2 & 3, and M&M VI and VII. It's been too long since I played M&M games though I've played Heroes every now and then for years, so Erathia here I come.

I see several questions about Heroes Chronicles.

I just finished playing it for the first time, so I'll share my experience.

Chronicles consists of several standalone campaigns. There are no standalone maps to play. It is HOMM3 for beginners. The difficulty level is less than beginner. Throughout the game basic level hints will be given, i.e. visit standalone creature dwellings weekly, regularly visit the windmill for extra resources.

On the whole, it is rather lengthy, but experienced HOMM3 players will likely find zero challenge and will in fact regularly finish maps before the daily text boxes stop providing parts of the story. I ended up sitting in front of the last enemy and skipping days and days in a row on most maps just so I could finish up the storyline for each one.

As for the other games in the sale, I prefer HOMM3 over 2. I always felt like 3 was much more balanced than 2 (my favorite unbalanced unit in 2 was ghosts. If you could convince a roaming group to join your hero, you were essentially set for the rest of the map.).

I always have a great love for M&M IV and V combined to make World of Xeen. Talk about the strategy of game balance. Unlike many RPGs where you simply cannot enter areas of the game world where you character is not strong enough to survive, World Of Xeen will allow you to explore those areas at your own peril. You'll be moving along just fine until you run into a monster that you can't even scratch with your characters' current abilities and/or weapons. There's something thrilling about exploring the game knowing you could suddenly find yourself overwhelmed and dead at any moment. It also makes it that much more rewarding when you finally get the ability/weapons to go back and take those bad boys out. Just remember, save often...
