Ultima series, Populous, Wing Commander, Syndicate, Theme Hospital, SimCity 2000, and 20 more EA games 60% off.

Making games is more than just craftsmanship. Game development often goes into the realm of arts. Not just any kind of arts, mind you. Certainly not the unplugged kind. Nope. The electronic kind. If that's not a good reason to call your game developing and publishing company <i>Electronic Arts</i>, then I don't know what is. Established 30 years ago, <i>EA</i> is now one of the worlds biggest supplier of computer games and a synonymous of a gaming industry giant. As such, it offers a variety of titles from every and any possible genre. This weekend a [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/ea_weekend_promo_02_11_12/]Massive EA Selection of games is available 60% off on GOG.com. Let's look at some of the games that put the "A" in EA!

Richard Gariott's Ultima remains an icon of computer RPGs, and many gamers consider Ultima 7 to be the best entry in the entire series. Our Complete Edition includes all four chapters of the game--The Black Gate, Forge of Virtue, Serpent Isle and The Silver Seed--in one handy DRM-free package. Become the virtuous Avatar, the savior of Britannia, to discover the origin of many strange occurrences spreading across the land and to stop the mysterious malicious entity, known as the Guardian, from pushing the world into its doom. With countless hours of deep and satisfying gameplay, this one is a must for all the RPG fans! There's no reason to stop at lucky number seven, though. The whole Ultima series--including the groundbreaking 3D dungeon crawler: Ultima Underworld 1+2--is on promo, so you can experience every single adventure of the Avatar (formerly know as "the Stranger") 60% off!

What Ultima is to RPGs, the Wing Commander series is to the space sim genre. Follow the story of the war between Terrans and the feline menace Kilrathi in Wing Commander 1+2 and Wing Commander 3: Heart of Tiger, then once the world is over and a shaky alliance is formed with the cat-like aliens, face new enemies threatening the Confederation in Wing Commander 4: The Price of Freedom. The 3rd and 4th installments of the series use full motion video cut scenes to tell its elaborate stories and feature big names such as Mark Hamill, Malcolm MacDowell, and John Rhys-Davies as the Wing Commander universe prominent characters. You can also choose your own fate and pursue your goals as a mercenary, a trader, or even a space pirate in the series' popular open-ended spin-off, Wing Commander: Privateer. With the creator of Wing Commander series back in the game, and his Star Citizen on the way, it's a good time to revisit those wonderful games!

Not a space-sim or RPG fan? More of an armchair general? Not a problem! Thare's plenty of trategic/managarial games in our Massive EA Selection, as well! is the original "god game", giving you the ability to shape the world and the fates of its inhabitants in a multi-layered strategic gameplay. [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/syndicate]Syndicate does pretty much the same thing, using the means of brutal corporate rivalry, cyber-implant technology, and espionage in a dark, dystopian future. Theme Hospital puts you in charge of a high-profile medical facility, making you--once again--the master of life and death. Finally, Sim City 2000 SE makes you the mayor of an aspiring virtual town, that wishes to develop into a metropoly.

That's just a little taste of our Massive EA Selection. Head out to the promo page to find out what 20 other great EA titles you can get 60% off this weekend on GOG.com!

Which Populous should I pick up if I was just going to get one?

Definitely Populous The Beginning I'd say.

I haven't played any and was wondering that myself. The most helpful review of Populus 2 starts by saying:

While Populous 1 is a milestone and a classic of its own, Populous 2 is in every aspect the better game. Higher resolutions, better graphics, better defined interface, more god powers, more strategies, more, MOAR!!
No, seriously. If you have to choose between Populous 1 and 2, choose the latter
Can I play Ultima 7 without playint the first 6 games? I'm curious about trying it, but I really can't feel much interest in the previous versions...

Yes, you can. The back story is usually in the manual and most people in the game will refer to some past events with a decent amount of explanation.

there is also a problem with populous 3 which some people get. The populous forums have the solution in post 18 of the thread linked below, but this was back in April, and it doesn't look like anything has been changed in the games files yet:

post 18 contains the solution.

It found my videocard OK but I did have some minor graphical glitch which was resolved here:

Also got the choppy crackling audio on the menu a bit which some find a patch helps with (didn't seem to help me but might be how Im running the game). Still its only on the main menu and not ingame so no biggie.

I remember trying to get Populous The Beginning to run via my original disc and it was a terrible hot mess of colours and nothing rendered or ran correctly making it unplayable so glad I can play it again. I played through it about 2 -3 times as a kid (and there are a lot of levels with different ways you can win them). Love it.
If I didn't enjoy the original Black & White, chances are that I won't like Populous either, right?

You mean Populous The Beginning? I had Black and White back when it was released and barely played it but played Populous The Beginning through multiple times. I can't really remember fully how things go in Black and White, but in Populous The Beginning you don't control one big creature. And you start off with followers already who can breed to make more devoted followers rather than having to get some to follow you through love or nurture, others you can convert to your side, but they instantly worship you once converted. You do get full control of your shaman and a lot of destructive spells, but there is plenty of strategy which involves utilising and training up your tribe of villagers and having them either defend your base or go after the enemy in tactical ways.

Lands of Lore games, are they good? Between 1+2 and 3, which is better?

And Crusader looks like an RPG type game, does it have RPG elements in any one of the games?

Well, Lands of Lore series are RPGs, but LoL 1 is one of the best dungeon crawlers of the period and in general, so if you like that genre, you should enjoy the first entry in the series.

The Crusader series is an isometric run-and-gun, with plenty of weapons and (explosive) tools to chose from, with destructible environments and ability to approach the same problem in different ways. So no RPG elements at all. It is, however, based on a heavily-modified Ultima 8 engine, so I see why you might had been confused.

I haven't played Lands of Lore yet (just bought them)

Crusader isn't an RPG, it's a straight up shooter. Very fun game if you're into killing tons of people.

Thanks for the info on Crusader, I might just skip these two shooters for now.

About LoL, I've seen only one gameplay video of the first game on Youtube, so I don't know, whether it plays like M&M in which we control a party of characters, or do we just control one character only? No point on asking about the second game since it is bundled with the first game, but how about the third game? Is it worth to buy both 1+2 and 3?

Sangrius: I was wondering whether anyone here is interested in a small trade. At the moment I have a single gift code that includes Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I would be willing to trade in either of this games for Crusader No Remorse and/or Crusader No Regret. Much thanks in advance ^^

PS. I apologize if I happened to breach any particular protocol with this post, alas this is the first time I have posted on gog.com heheh

Edit: Fallout tactics has just been redeemed. Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Giants: Citizen Kabuto are still available.
Hallo, I'm willing to buy you any one of the CRUSADER games for FALLOUT 2, if you still haven't got the game and still have F2 gift code available, but please respond to my PM before the promo ends so that I can make the purchase in time. :)

Edit: Thanks for both FALLOUT 2 and GIANTS: CITIZEN KABUTO! :D

Wondering whether to get Syndicate. Is it basically like Cannon Fodder but with some Jedi mind trick stuff? I also had a old 90s game called Deadline by Psygnosis which had tactical missions controlling a group of people rescuing hostages, but in that you could see and go through buildings whereas it seems you can't in Syndicate.

Also considering the earlier Populous 2. Loved The Beginning but I know they're different. And Alpha Centauri, I've never played any of the Civ games and not sure if it'd be as gripping without any nostalgia. Decisions decisions!
