Does anyone have any recommendations for total conversions or other mods that are nearly total conversions? I am especially interested in TC's for modern games. It seems to me that you used to hear about TC's all that time but it has been a long time since I have seen any TC's mentioned.

I guess that is partly to do with the extremely sad trend of fewer games having mod tools but also partly to do with the increase in resources required to create game content.

But surely there has to be a TC or two out there that I haven't heard about. I am also very very much interested in any potential standalone games based on source code releases. I know there have been some of those for id's engines.

Edit:

I prefer singleplayer to multiplayer.

Apart from the legendary original Counter Strike (back then it was a Half-Life TC),
I remember some for Unreal Tournament 2004, Meta Ball was my favourite.

If you've played ALL of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, then I suggest Lost Alpha.

- New version of the x-ray engine.
- New Maps, remade maps, cut features
- New Story
- Was going to be an official release until a leaked build messed that up and forced the launch of the current beta.
Here. This is a beauty! Turns your copy of Dungeon Siege into Ultima V.

Bid for Power was a funny multiplayer TC for Quake 3 Arena about Dragonball Z.
They had to replace the characters and areas later on due to licensing issues but you can reintegrate them somehow, I think. I played it via LAN about 13 years ago.

Another mutiplayer Quake 3 TC that is available without the need for Q3 now is World of Padman.

Then there is The Dark Mod which is a Doom 3 TC based on Thief and considered to be better then some of the original games by some people.
It's available without the need for Doom 3 by now too.

If you don't mind older engines, there's my Wolfenstein 3D TC called Orb of Dilaaria.
Nehrim for TES4: Oblivion.
Wolf3D: Operation Eisenfaust - Origins, Spear Resurrection, End of Destiny, Castle Totenkopf

Doom 2: HACX, Strain, Action Doom and it's sequel, ZanZan, Harmony, Barista 1, Chosen

Duke 3D: AMC, WGRealms 2, Duke Nukem Forever 2013, Platoon, Starship Troopers

Marathon: Red, Rubicon X, Phoenix

wolfsrain: Nehrim for TES4: Oblivion.
That's a really good one.

I'd add Diccuric mod for Gothic.
Aliens TC for DOOM, and the version for Quake as well.

I thought the Quake version got hit with a C&D and was never released? The Aliens TC is pretty cool though.

I will also toss in for Orb of Dilaaria. Elwroy's list is pretty good, though from what I've seen Operation: Eisenfaust - Origins goes on way too long and has several bad design decisions that make the last 1/3rd a bit of a slog. I also can't recommend Hacx, and I wasn't impressed with WGRealms 2, but everything else on there is gold.

On their own, Epic2 and Wild Weasel's Nazis! aren't a TC, but put them together and you have yourself a TC for Doom 2. Nazis! was designed to be used with Epic2 (though it can be used with any Doom .wad), and it makes an interestign Wolfenstein style experience.

Edit: How could I forget ChexQuest? It's free now, and standalone, just search for ChexQuest 3, it has one and two built in. It's a Doom TC that came in boxes of Chex cereal.
