Zellio2009: Steam can do this too, otherwise phishing wouldn't work.
Your arguing if it can be done, then acting like legalities would be different with steam and Gog.

Eh, I suppose I am splitting some pretty fine hairs. Not much reason to push the issue further.

DarrkPhoenix: Trying to shut down discussion of what competitors are offering will only bring unnecessary and ultimately harmful pettiness into the matter, and I'd like to believe that GOG can succeed much better based purely on the merits of what they're offering.
You may be right about the former, but I doubt you're right about the latter. At least, people seem only to consider the price of individual releases.

Weclock: GOG is first-sale-violating too. ;D
Heh, yeah. Didn't think that through, did I? Still by far the superior service though.
I'm looking forward to see how Stardock's GOO system works out.

Wishbone: Also, I see it as slightly disrespectful to GOG to use their forum for advertising their competition.

Hmmm, I'd say that it is not a big problem - as long as it is not done by people who get paid for it or our forum is not flooded by this kind of stuff.
And regarding being competitors. We do not compete that much directly. In some cases we do, and then is often visible, that GOG has no big chances in direct competition. We have best community we can imagine:) but still our customer base is many times smaller (there is 15mln users on steam!). So Valve, as a market leader, has much bigger chances to get better deals/promos etc. Of course we do our best to have at least similarly attractive deals, but for sure arranging this, is more difficult for us. We knew it from the begging and we didn’t want to compete directly, that is why GOG is just different from other services. Actually in CD Projekt we have history of energy/money consuming hardcore fights on the local markets. And we know that it brings more negative things than positive, so we really don’t want to go in this direction.

I think, that we actually compete indirect in other area. We do have different visions of digital distribution. And I think, that there is a competition among those visions/philosophies. Thankfully GOG vision is pretty appealing:) and different from market standard. And there is a chance that it will start spreading like a disease;) This is our strength. And on this field we are not on the lost positions:)
Surely there is a space on the market for more than 1 digital distribution platform. We hope that some day GOG will be among leaders:)
I glad that GOG exists as It is an easy way to get great classics and I'm glad Steam exist for occasional weekend deals. There is also Gamers gate that I have looked at but have not bought anything there yet and Impulse that seems interesting but they tend to be rather pricey. I'd rather not relay on steam if I can and GOG helps. I was not able to by the GOG bundle that one weekend but it had me interested and I hope to see more at even better deals. I also like the bonuses that add to the value of the game like soundtracks that you would normally have to by separately and the ability to work on any computer without an external service.
Today, I had a Delima were I was not sure If I wanted to by the weekend deal on steam especially for B&GE or wait and Get GOG edition instead. After doing much research and that I heard that The GOG edition of B&GE works better convinced me to wait.
Keep going you guys and i support you

Well you're doing a pretty good job of taking my money, 1 game on steam vs 17 on GOG.
Now if you'd only quit slackng off and get Dawn Of War 2 & Empire Total War...

well yes but they've only got thief 3 on steam, the only other games on steam tempting me are ETW & DOW2. Oh and the hitman games, I'd gladly rebuy hitman 1 just so I don't have to put the slowdown cheat in every time I use a menu

Me too. I like steam, and they have good offers (same goes for some other services) but I don't tend to bring them up here if they are taking business away from GOG.
As for the initial post, thats not why i'm here. I'm here because I like the site and the old games, but DRM has never been much of an issue for me.
Its good that people give advice here and recommend good deals, but i'm not sure about constantly talking about competing services.

I can't see Dawn of War II ever coming here..Relic are jerks/Steam whores. :P
Yeah but I don't WANNA have it involved with steam damnit!
Damn them all to hell!
Company of Heroes is a good game, but it has CD authentication BUILT in to the damn game.
makes you long for the days of code wheels... monkey island 2 had one of my favourites. The interweb killed off that idea mind.

I thought in the physical copy you could either leave the game in the drive while playing, or register the game to their servers so you would connect to the Internet and the servers would tag your copy to your game, letting you play without a disc in your drive. It's pretty unintrusive as copy protection goes.

yeah, no disc is required as long as you have a key, but the whole authentication process is built into the game mechanics, meaning it could never come to GOG.com

Even if Relic stripped the protection out, it's still too new to come to GOG.
