NameGoo: Nice. Not sure if anyone will get this but...OMG, it's the Bow Upgrade!
Heh watching that part again, I can't imagine that scene ever being in a Thief cinematic. I ghosted most of my way through T2. The last thing I'd expect Garrett to be encouraged to do is to alert people to his presence, then stand in a conspicuous spot to shoot them down.

In the intro of Thief 1 or 2 he actually kills a guard in cold blood. So much on the official stance on "ghosting".

To be fair, the original games also gave you mines, which are something I can't imagine Garrett ever using.

EDIT: Yeah, and that cinematic bit. Wanted to add that, too. Sneaksie SimonGsie.

I'm just hoping they'll use a name which is pronounceable, like Thief 4: Really Compelling Subtitle, as opposed to "Thi4f".
My point was that it's more to do with the "look at me I'm a badass" vibe. That's why I avoided mentioning 'killing in cold blood' specifically, and instead used the term 'shoot them down'. I only brought up ghosting to emphasize the importance of the sneaky vibe from the cinematics of the first 2 games.

Edited post because I was half asleep when I typed this. Changed:
"That's why I avoided mentioning killing"
to
"That's why I avoided mentioning 'killing in cold blood' specifically, and instead used the term 'shoot them down'".

Arkose: The bow upgrade is a strange choice. Garrett's primary gear has always been ordinary or magical, with technology reserved to secondary equipment like flash bombs. It's also clearly more showy than practical (the condensed form is still very bulky) which has never been Garrett's thing.

I hope they don't overdo it in an attempt to make Garrett more marketable.
Yeah, this bothers me a bit. One of the main reasons, imo, the Thief series is awesome (especially Thief 2), is that you really feel like a thief. All of your base equipment is pretty simple: Dagger, blackjack, bow, etc. The tech-y stuff is, as you said, mostly one-time limited-use stuff like flash bombs and scout orbs. And, as other people said, it does seem a little too "Heh, look how cool I am" on the part of Garrett (though I suppose it's possible it's not Garrett, but a younger "edgier" new main character would probably be even worse).

Pemptus: Also, Thief 4 is supposed to have multiplayer and it's supposed to play a big part.
Could you provide a link? Because that's really depressing. The one way I could see multiplayer Thief working is if you all play thieves in a large map and have to race to collect a certain amount of stuff or complete an objective. This could be a lot of fun (and would encourage alternate strategies, such as ghosting so there're more guards for the other players to deal with). Alternatively, it'd be interesting if one team were thieves and the other were guards.

Anyway, I'll reserve judgement until we see some actual gameplay. At the very least, I can't see them making it purely third person. They may do something where you can switch like in Thi3f (which, incidentally, makes more sense then Thi4f), which was alright. I liked the body awareness, even if it was a little weird at times, and you can just choose to ignore third person if you want.

I can't unfortunately. I believe I came across some interviews while browsing the TTLG forums.

I'll look it up later and report back.
wait, didn't they say Thief 4 would take place in modern times?!? that's what everybody complained about.

Please tell me you hallucinated that. I'm going to die right now if that's true (though the trailer suggests it's keeping the medieval victorian thing).
Deus Ex HR sold me this game, no need for promotion.

hucklebarry: They had originally mentioned that Garret was retired. Thief 4 and beyond were supposed to be another character.
Maybe it's the kid who tried to rob Garret in the epilogue of T3. Judging from the way he reacted, it sounded like he wanted to take an apprendice.

That was the popular assumption. And it would allow for Garrett to still be involved as a "trainer" while still not being the main character.

No, he didn't hallucinate that. This is what modern Garrett was supposed to look like. The idea has been scrapped...hopefully.
As far as multiplayer goes, I think it's still all speculations.

Watching that part, my first thought was "Ok, they're trolling us now!"

Oh, right, I forgot about that. I just really, desperately hope he doesn't end up being one of those generic "edgy" anti-hero types, that's a massive pet peeve of mine.

In my opinion, Garrett was believable and likable because he was actually an anti-hero. He wasn't overly edgy or violent, he just legitimately didn't want to be a hero. He felt more like a regular guy (except for being a sort of magic ninja thief) who would really rather just be left alone to do his thing, but eventually grudgingly saves the world. Which is in vast contrast to what anti-hero usually means, which is, "RAWR. I'm like a normal hero but cooler and more violent and edgy and stuff! Blood! Angst! RAWR".

It'd be interesting if they portrayed him being a bit more smirk-y, if you know what I mean, than Garrett, though they'd have to handle it gracefully so he didn't just end up annoying.
