Skystrider: And now, the grand finale BEGINS!

First Batch of Winners, Friday 13/05 2011:

#1 WHITE WOLF AWARD WINNER
Nikou

{Warning, the following entry might contain sections that can be slightly not safe for work or school. Beware your boss. Also, there are some spoilers of The Witcher 1. You have been warned.}.

Entry:
As I don't like charity or effortlessly gifts I've made a promo "magazine" to deserve it. I hope you like it. You can download it at:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13783981/The%20Witcher%20Magazine.pdf
http://www.multiupload.com/TD2FJBFOOM

{Oh. Oh, it is good. It is very, very good. High-resolution images from Witcher 2? Check. Great preview narrative that we easily could have taken for something out of a real magazine? Check. Pullout posters? Uh uh. There is no doubt about it, Nikou is the first winner of our newly reconstructed White Wolf Award. There will be two more later today. For now, enjoy this epic entry from a master fan of the Witcher!}

Gold Award Winner:
DavidGil

Entry:
“I thought I'd write a piece set in the parts of the Witcher's world that I'm familiar with, with being a writer. I'd have chose something original but settled on 'fanfic' with it feeling appropiate. I'm not too well up on the lore so hopefully it fits. Also, I avoided naming the witcher in case there were any conflicts with the characters.

My contest entry

The poor littered the streets of Vizima’s Temple Quarter, like trash cast out of the nobles’ houses. Flies buzzed around the streets and alleyways, while the commoners coughed and tried to keep themselves warm while fighting disease.

In comparison, where the witcher now walked, the Trade Quarter seemed a place of cleanliness. Few, if any, ‘scum’ wandered the streets and the witcher mused that the nobles plaguing this district with their money and stuck-up views should be the ones trying to make ends meet in the Temple Quarter. Indeed, the word 'scum' should more be used to describe the rich who live life in luxury.

But alas, a job was a job and he was not one to turn down a tidy sum of orens that came from the purse of a rich man. He’d found the notice that the nobleman had put up outside of a tavern in the Temple Quarter and looking up at the man’s house, he knew that the payment would not disappoint, despite the task being one that wouldn’t be easy.

He knocked on the door and a fat man, dressed in red finery, answered. The man looked the Witcher up and down. ‘Here because of the notice, witcher?’

‘Yes.’

The man, called Bernard, stepped outside after spitting. ‘Good, witcher. The Striga has plagued us for a while now. Cursed beast.’

The Witcher nodded. ‘I’ve heard tell of it. Where does it rest?’

‘The cemetary in the Temple Quarter. You do not wish to know the details?’

‘Only whether you wish it dead or cured.’

‘Dead.’

‘Very well. Payment?’

‘We’ll discuss that when the deed’s done, witcher.’

The witcher nodded, though he expected Bernard to try and cheat him. It was no worry, for he knew he’d get the payment in the end. ‘I’ll be back when the deed’s done.’

#

The witcher had entered the cemetary’s crypt just before nightfall. He needed to be there for when the Striga awoke, lest he missed it. The crypt itself was quiet and torches lighted the way, with cobwebs adorning the walls and the dead sleeping peacefully within their ancient homes.

The witcher stopped the moment he heard a fierce howl. It echoed throughout the crypt’s halls and dust fell from the ceiling. Slowly, he drew his silver sword, ready for the Striga to show itself and it would need to for he waited at the only place where the Striga could leave for the city’s streets to prey on people.

The sound of a heavy creature running along the stone floor reached his ears and the noise got louder and louder, telling him that the beast was drawing closer. He remained still, his feet firmly placed on the ground as he stood in a defensive stance, prepared to tackle the Striga head on.

He first caught a glimpse of the creature’s eyes, then he saw its bulky body leaping at him. He sidestepped it swiftly and brought his sword down, slicing the Striga’s back. It fell and got back up, snarling.

They danced around each other, like two opponents figuring the other out before making their moves. The witcher was graceful in his movements, while the Striga was hunched and moved with less grace, though it was clear that the beast was agile. Underneath the creature’s dark skin, he could see its muscles moving in tandem.

The Striga moved first, again leaping at the witcher. In one swift moment, the creature saw its life extinguished as its head rolled along the floor. The witcher looked at its twitching body, before sheathing his sword, picking the Striga’s head up and leaving.

#

The witcher wasted no time in seeking his payment. He banged on the door, not wanting to wait about in case the guards got curious about the sack he was carrying around. Besides, he also knew what was coming.

The door opened and Bernard stood before him. Again, he didn’t invite the witcher in, because it wouldn’t do to have a witcher in a rich man’s house. ‘Is it done?’

The witcher didn’t answer. He only produced the bloody sack, offering it to Bernard.

Bernard looked inside and nodded. ‘Job well done, witcher.’ He reached for something to the left of the door. ‘As promised, your payment.’

The witcher caught the pouch, though when he felt the pouch and saw the size, he looked at Bernard. ‘My payment?’

‘What?’

The Witcher checked for guards, before grabbing a hold of Bernard and shoving him inside the house. ‘My payment, pig.’ The witcher let go of him, closed the door and drew a knife. ‘I suggest you pay what’s proper without alerting the guards because you know what witchers are capable of. Then, I’ll be on my way. If not, it’s been a while since I’ve had some fun with a pig.’

Bernard soiled himself, shaking. ‘Yes... yes, of course. I... I’ll go get it...’

‘Good, pig.’

Bernard retrieved several more pouches from a cabinet. ‘Is... is that satisfactory enough...?’

The witcher looked inside the pouches and checked their weight, then nodded. ‘Yes,’ then he hit Bernard in the stomach, before opening the door. ‘Next time you try to cheat someone, you may not be so lucky.’

With that, he left Bernard in a stinking, crying mess and considered the thought that nobles had never been too smart thinking they could cheat anyone. Even a witcher. “

{With an entry like that, it goes without saying: Gold all the way}.

Silver Award Winner:
KiPhish

{Be sure you look at the picture first before reading part 2. Art is best when you come at it unprepared}.

Entry:
(Part 1) http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb325/KiPhish/Identity.jpg

(Part 2) Explanation of Work

“In the art, I wanted to explore the psychology behind why I play games. Fundamentally, I play games to discover who I am and who I'm not - experiencing yourself and your ideals reflected upon a character helps you find your identity in the curious thing called "reality," where only your mind defines what reality ultimately is. Is reality what it appears to be? Is there such a thing called fate? Is death final? What is death? Having a stable self-identity provides a solid foundation where we can start to evaluate and ponder upon these questions of our lifetimes… Our reflections give us comfort by aiding us in our journey of self-discovery and self-development. I think that is the underlying reason why we seek games, movies, books, etc. We seek our identity in reality - a place in the world.

I flipped the words because I wanted the viewer to experience what it's like to use another medium (mirror) to view through. I was hoping to give a sensation that reality is more than what appears to be. I was also hoping that viewing the work through the mirror would somehow create a feeling of detachment by illustrating that the "transformed reality" is more favorable than "actual reality," therefore, acknowledging the core themes of "reflection" and "identity." Witcher II was used because I wanted to form a connection to the competition which started for the promotion of Witcher II. “

{An entry that demonstrated excellent philosophical thought, perfectly reflected (literally!) in art. The ninth silver reward has found it's perfect home}.

Bronze Winner:
Juice99

{Many here in the Jury could easily relate to Juice' rage, and have decided to award him the ninth Bronze Award. We hope he may find something of interest among the classics at GOG, that can wash away the disappointment of Dragon Age 2}.
Many thanks SkyStrider for doing this and I'm a happy bunny right now. :) I'll probably write some guides for The Witcher 2 at some point, though I'm sure it won't match the guide given by GOG.

I just sent my PM to you now as well. And congrats to the other winners.
Awright I won something! *fist pump*
Congratulations to the new batch of winners ... and truly epic 1st White Wolf work! Crossing my fingers for the last announcement .. hoping .. praying .. maybe :)
Many, many, many thanks Skystrider :D

I wasn't sure that I could win, so I'm very, very happy and you really make my day (if not the month).

At first the "magazine" was going to have more original content, but due to lack of time I had cut it or replace it. I was going to include a fanfic I wrote some time ago, but it's not in english and it's about 10 pages, so I had no time to translate it properly.

I think it has been good that White Wolf has been splitted. Award is GREAT anyway and more people can win and enjoy this great game.

Again, many thanks for your generosity Skystrider :)

I'm anxious to see the rest of winners. Good luck to all.
8 minutes and new winners, i think. The end of the event... Or not?
And the grand finale continues:

Bronze Winner:
DodoGeo

{Warning: this entry contains mild material that might not be safe for work or school}.

Entry:
My little entry for the contest. It's in a form of a preview article of how I imagine the game.

{Us in the Jury thinks there is not nearly enough parody in today's gaming industry, and so applauds DodoGeo's excellent effort with the final bronze award!}.

#2 WHITE WOLF AWARD WINNER
Kieran88

Entry:
“I believe I deserve to win because I'm such a huge Witcher nerd that I'm working on converting some of Andrzej Sapkowski's witcher stories into a comic. That's dedication right there (being a starving artist has to count for something, right? hehe).

yaaaaaaaay! thank you so much for this and putting on such a great competition. Congrats to all the winners and participants as well :)
I love it how you left the best entries for the final days, that way you brought witcher 2 frenzy to the climax. Hat's off to you my good sir!
To CDP:Red - hire this man for your head PR, you won't regret it ;)
Congratulations to all the winners, it was a truly magnificent competition and the quality of your entries was awesome. My hat's off to this community :) Guys you are great.
Now tear that hole in the reality :P
So, late last night, at the stroke of midnight to May 13th:

We in the Jury were just calling it for the day; we had decided the final winners, finally come to an agreement about the White Wolf Award, and as far as we knew, we were done. Then, just as I reached to switch off the lights and close the door, a piece of paper suddenly drops to the floor... As if from nowhere. Curious, I pick up the paper and start to read it, passing it on to my peers in the Jury when I was done. We were all rather confused, but at the same time elated; a entry we had never seen before, yet one we must surely have printed out. Not only that, but an entry that definitely had to be awarded for its offbeat awesomeness.
So, what else could we do but marshal our resources and create one more Gold award: the eleventh out of ten.

Third Batch of Winners, Friday 13/05 2011:

Gold Winner:
dr.zli

{Warning: the following entry might just blow your mind}.

Entry:
“You'll be amazed to learn what I did to win witcher 2!
Realizing that I need to be as creative as some of the most creative people on these forums, I set a grand plan in motion. I stopped reading forums and who won the prizes because that wouldn't be important when my plan reaches its conclusion. My son was born on the 25th of july 2011 and my plan entered it's first phase.
During his childhood i tried very hard to make him interested in science, developing him in direction I wanted him to go. As the years went by and he matured he became a student of physics and a great scientist in the field of quantum physics. I then realized that he was ready to be indoctrinated with the Plan. I explained to him that we were destined to make a time traveling machine and that if he doesn't do it his children or grandchildren must accomplish this great undertaking!
In the years that followed we worked hard, inventing all sorts of things related to time, struggling to survive in the world that changed because of... hmm, I better skip that part for your own good.
Anyway, I lived a good life (when not dodging THEM) and spent some great time playing with my numerous grandchildren and inventing things knowing that my plan had barely began. I died a happy man and passed a sealed envelope to my son with strict instructions to pass it further and deliver it to me when the time machine is completed, whenever that happens.
Years went by and my son became an old man, cherished by his children and grandchildren but still time machine's completion was nowhere in sight. He passed along a sealed envelope to his eldest son and died in september of 2096.
His eldest son continued the tradition and participated in a mission which saved the earth from a menace I can't tell you anything about, sorry, which unfortunately took some years off his research but he continued working on it, trying hard to bend laws of physics for our grand plan to succeed. He had only daughters so when he passed the sealed envelope he deviated slightly form the plan which almost ruined us. You see, his eldest daughter was interested only in fashion design, so she departed earth for Zeta Reticuli 6 and started a successfull company there which catered to fashion needs of Reticularians but she neglected the Plan and completely forgot to pass on the envelope to her eldest daughter. It happened to be that her daughter was spoiled brat who hated her mother and who auctioned all her belongings to rich collectors through the galaxy. My sealed envelope along with my grand grand grand granddaughters flexiplast underwear collection went to the slimy hands of Gnard Zapllobox, who didn't comprehend the importance of that envelope and used it in now infamous hoax, selling it as the only remaining copy of the treaty of Potlap XII and it went to the galactic museum at LV427.
During the second galactic war of independence, museum was looted and my envelope, along with various other artifacts went to the hands of ZWlllpt-Gruupt, the only remaining heir of ZWlllpt dynasty who intended to use it in his bid for power in the Bllllrp quadrant. His plan backfired when he opened the envelope in front of usurper king's heirs and he realized that it was not his Dynasty's treaty that he holds but some random alien writing. He was promptly murdered by their psionic attacks when his psi defence crumbled and his remains and my (now defiled) envelope and its contents were launched into space in an unmarked probe.
During the third coming of Jesus, the probe collided with the pleasure yacht "endless coitus III" which cruised the unexplored reaches of space while unimaginable orgies happened in its halls, almost killing my grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grandson who just happened to be on the quest to find the true meaning of his existence. Scanning the letter with his third eye, he realized that he holds the part of his family's legend about the mad time machine inventor and during the satori that he experienced he wowed to fulfill the great plan of his ancestors. It was only in the last 700 years of his life that he managed to fund an intergalactic institute of physics which employed the best scientist all across the 17 known inhabited galaxies.
During their research they found out that the whole universe is on the brink of destruction and realized that the time machine may be the only answer to save it. And pass along my message in the process.
It took scientists almost 15000 years to develop a first working prototype of a time machine. First tests were successfull and soon they managed to find my grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grand grandson ( sorry, I'd like to believe that, I won't lie to you though, they organized a lottery for a volounteer) and sent him to the exact same moment I hatched this grand Plan to inform me and you this: "If I managed to send you a message that travelled time and unimaginable distances and galaxies, I am worthy of witcher 2 and it's digital awesomness!"

Also, the secret of saving the whole universe is... hmm, forget that, I think I have another Plan”

[The Jury was indeed amazed, and who are we to defy millions of years of history? None, I tell you! We can only bow to the good Doctor, the eleventh winner of the Gold Award}

#3 WHITE WOLF AWARD WINNER

{If, by the off chance, that last entry did not blow your mind, this one will}.

Entry:

{...Well, our minds are blown at least. While it is true the story has little to do with The Witcher, it is also true it happens to be the most offbeat, most strangest, most crazy, totally insane, totally awesome story that we have ever laid our eyes upon. And since offbeat was what we asked for in our description of the White Wolf Award, well, it seems fitting that Wang should be the last recipient of this award. Even though he probably isn't from this world, or anywhere nearby}.

Coming up:
Honorable mentions. And a couple of surprises delivered to some inboxes over this weekend. You either know who you are, or you are about to know. Sweet dreams!

Yessssss!!! :D
Thank you Skystrider and thanks to the jury!
All this suspense until the end, I am so relieved and happy!
Congratulations to the other winners!
:D
Yay, thank you for a really great competition. The GOG staff could use a few cues from from this great effort.
Congratulations for all the winners! Guys, i will keep this topic in my favourites forever - so i can read/watch all the entries when is want to.
And thank you too, Skystrider for hosting this competiton - you and your friends in the jury did something greater than giving some games to some creative guy. I enjoyed reading the entries and i sure you did too.

But beware! Next time the Witcher 2 is released, i will be here and i'm going to win!
(maybe inventing my own time machine to tell my past me to be more creative, or just send him the next week's lottery numbers. I don't know. I have to think it over. Or not.)

But who cares - thanks for the entries, have fun with the game(s)!
Yay! Congrats to all winners! Will write you a PM later tonight, Skystrider.
