I couldn't find any reference to this on the forum, so I thought I'd post it. If there is already a thread about it that my search didn't uncover, my apologies.

A colleague showed me this video today. It's a tech demo for a student project by a team from Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center. Watching the video, one thought kept going through my mind: Valve is going to grab these guys real soon.

Given how Portal 1+2 came into existence, this seems like an extremely likely candidate for Portal 3. What do you guys think?
That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I don't know about it becoming Portal 3, but I don't doubt it will be made into a full game.

very cool gameplay demo
See, if you'd used the actual name of the game, I might have found that thread ;-)
That is really cool. It has so many possibilities!

I don't know about Portal 3, but I'm sure that playing Portal would be good training for that puzzle/game, and vice versa. Lateral thinking!

hehe - what name? it has not got one yet

But anyway, the more threads the better, it deserves to be seen.

edit: Your thread is also much better, so I will just copy-pasta mine into here and we can pretend this was the intentions all along.

First of all apologies, the game is not got a name yet, it is at the moment a tech demo. However, this is a tech demo wich shows what can be potentially a brilliant puzzle game.

In some way it reminds me about Perspective (another very good game, and it is free) in that it is playing on forced perspectives, but this is in first person and not as straightforward.

This is something worth following to see what it will end up as, and as long as we have students with an imagination like this coming up, I do not fear that the game industry will stagnate :)

Take a look at the tech demo:

(and if you like this sort of games, then Scale will also probably be worth checking out)

Looks like it could be interesting for a couple hours. Would likely get boring quite quickly as the only mechanic in a game. Seems more like something to use as a gimmick for a level or two, to add a bit of variety to a game. I am likely not the target audience for something like this, though.

The name of the tech demo is in fact The Museum of Simulation Technology. But enough of that.

I can't wait to try this out. I wish they'd said something about the time frame. Does anybody know if the tech demo is available anywhere?

I have been looking for it, but have not found anything yet.
This is brain melting. My eyes and brain are still fighting with each other.
Loved it!
That was amazing -- thanks for sharing, guys.

I suspect the demo video only scratches the surface of what could be done with this concept in a fully developed game.

It was the genius of Portal that you really only have one very simple mechanic. You wouldn't think you could do all that many things with a gun that shoots doorways. It's the situations that you get placed in that make it challenging and fun.

I'm especially intrigued by the way properties of things change as they change size. Also by how many of the levels require you to play around with things just to figure out what your objective is (i.e. where is the door?) You could have different types of objectives as well, in addition to just getting through an exit. And what if you had a very narrow space, so that your possibilities for altering perspectives are limited? How are you, as an anonymous first-person puzzle-solver, impacted by these same mechanics? (The level where you can shrink and grow yourself really blew my mind.)

It could get boring really quickly, it's true. But if you get enough creative ideas in puzzle design it could be brilliant.
Nice, though it looked gimmicky, maybe they could make some Escheresque levels with it.
Very cool! Thanks for the info ;-)
