The UK only Icewind, Baulders gate, and Planescapes are truly compatible and work perfectly without the bugs... sadly they are UK only... for some reason no US versions are being sold :(

eurotransient: Yeah, the existence of a possibly shady copy of the game on sale at Amazon isn't really the evidence against Planescape I'm looking for...
avatar
Navagon: I've got it. It works fine with Win7 64bit. Although you naturally need mods to get the most out of it. It is a bit shady though as Interplay are selling it and they shouldn't be.

Well, with GOG they do the necessary modding for you so it just runs :)
avatar
eurotransient: how many of the top wishlisted games has GOG managed to publish so far?

Fallout was a launch title. If it wasn't it would be above Planescape: Torment. My point? They already have games that are badly wanted by people. There are many games other than Planescape:Torment wanted including the number one game System Shock 2.

So that it runs.
But not so that all the missing quests are added back in. Or that widescreen and higher resolutions are properly supported with the necessary UI changes those require. Or that numerous gameplay bugs are resolved.
In short, the only differences between the GOG and retail versions would be:
1. No disc check for the GOG version.
2. There won't be a GOG version for various legal reasons and the fact that Interplay want more than $10 per copy.
Hello! :)
Just a couple of thoughts I had on the twitter and facebook hints:
3rd hint: They are two different characters, but they complement each other beautifully.
What if the one character is "E" and the other character is "A" ? Also doesn't it strike you that Avatar/Guardian is a beautifully complemented duo as well?
2nd hint: Where history overlaps with the present time.
At the moment I think that EA is the oldest game distributor out there which is still "unexcelled" throughout the years. Well, history overlaps with present time pretty well at the Command and Conquer series, doesn't it?
1st hint: The return of incredible karmic awareness.
This is the easiest one I think. Karma was a major characteristic of Ultima series, Black and White series and Dungeon Keeper series. All EA games at the moment.
I think the three hints scream "EA" all around themselves. :D

eurotransient: I agree, this kind of fanfare for a single game seems a bit over the top. That said, based on the wishlists compiled on GOG, Planescape is ranked number two and given the existing relationship with Interplay titles, seems ripe for the publishing.
Mind you, I don't actually think a single game deserves this sort of countdown fanfare, but how many of the top wishlisted games has GOG managed to publish so far? This would be quite an achievement for them, a symbolic release that lets us know they're listening and pursuing the very things we desire.
That said, I admit it's all a stretch... but that's what's fun about the guessing game, right? :)

As I said before:

cogadh: Why do people still think that it is simply a game? Haven't we already established that it cannot possibly be just a single game and it must be a new publisher deal?
- The countdown runs out on Thursday, which is the day of the week GOG always announces new publisher deals.
- No single game or series of games warrants this kind of attention with a countdown and the like, even if it is one of the most requested ones. More so if it is not one of the most requested ones (I'm looking at you Ultima series).
- GOG staff have already said this will be the biggest announcement in the history of GOG, rivaling the announcement of the site going public, but in a different category from that. How can any single game or series of games be that?
- Before Christmas, GOG said they would be announcing one of the "top three" publishers would be joining GOG in January. January is almost over folks, they have to announce it this week if they are going to stick to that schedule. <---this one is key
- None of the clues provided can conclusively point to a single game, but they can point to games and developers who are associated with a single publisher.
Whatever the announcement ends up being, you can be sure that some kind of game release will be involved, but that game, whatever it may be, is secondary to what the core of the announcement is: a new publisher is coming to GOG and it is a really, really big publisher. That means it has to be EA, ActiBlizz, Atari (has anyone mentioned that CDP, GOG's parent, already has a working relationship with Atari?), Squee, LucasArts or someone else as big as that (did I leave anyone out?).

Your point doesn't dismiss the fact that Planecape: Torment is currently (a) highly desired and (b) unavailable on GOG. Fallout got its own hype and was instrumental in the success of GOG during its infancy, especially given the timing, with Fallout 3 coming out that autumn.
MY point is that the existence of desired games on the service already does not preclude the need to hype the release of another desired game.
System Shock 2 would be pretty darn sweet, too, but it seems to me that would be a little more complicated to get a hold of, and thus, kind of unlikely at this time. But I'd love to be wrong about that!
I thought it was today! I can't count...
Would GOG please give us a clue, that would end all the Ultima/Torment speculation?:)
Pweetty Pweeze?
I hope it's EA.
Dang! 1 day 17 hours and some change! Now I am excited.....
lol .... damn....*watching the 4th season of dexter and it got to the HUGE twist* So.... prolly overly excitable right now lol....

Hyperbole. Retailers LOVE hyperbole! :)
Can you link me to where GOG said they'd be announcing one of the "top three" publishers joining in January? I'm looking through the news archive from December and I can't spot that little nugget of very important info.

First quarter. Not necessarily January. And the article in question was in Polish.

I believe this is what you're looking for, from page 5 of the current topic. (Please peruse the earlier pages of a topic, the answer's often already there. Thank you! :) )
Gundato: Did they ever actually say that? I thought they just said "something big" or "a new publisher", and everyone assumed that meant EA or another publisher they want. You know, sort of like with every Thursday since the site became public :p
It was in an article. 100% sure.
Edit: here it is (text near the bottom).

Yep, it did say "first quarter" and not "January", my bad:
http://polygamia.pl/Polygamia/1,101109,7264926,CDP__Wiedzmin_2_przelomowym_RPGiem__nowy_silnik_w.html
Rough translation from earlier in this thread:
"One of the 3 biggest game publishers will add their games to the GOG catalogue early next year."
Google translation from back when the article was first posted on the forums:
"In the first quarter of next year in the directory there will be playing one of the three major publishers and aims to be the biggest event in the history of GOGA. Preparing the big change in the site."
That still ties in with Mikee's statement earlier in this thread that whatever is coming on Thursday will be the biggest thing to ever happen to GOG:
avatar
Mikee: That's what we really love dear fans and customers:) But to be honest, this is just few days, is it such a big pain?:) We have ideas for definitely more painful actions in future;)
Some of you guys were damn close or even had a right guesses. So the answer is within;) The answer is (as usual) not the easiest and definitely not the most obvious, though.
But hints were given. And this is gonna be the biggest announcement ever in the GOG history (maybe except the opening of the site itself but this is different category;).
This will narrow speculations I think;)
And soon, enjoy!:)
M
PS. Have you noticed small change on the main page, now the importance is more underlined;)
