I am currently watching a friend play the new Grand Theft Auto and I can't help but get irritated by the constant swearing. It's probably just me but is any one else sick of cursing for the sake of it in games?

I might just be getting old but I remember when it was used less and abit more for comedic timing etc.

What do you think?

Reflects the current situation in gaming sadly (the pandering to teens/young adults), and the lack of innovation as evidenced by the CoD, BF franchise. If it helps moves more copies, the devs won't change it up.

If I don't like it, I don't buy it. I just go to Kickstarter :)

Yep, getting scammed is a great alternative to swearing in games.

Besides, GTA is like the worst example to drive this case. It's modern satire, shit yeah there's gonna be too much swearing.

Played Kingpin recently and was quite shocked at the language now, but I dont think it bothered me back when it was released, so swearing alot in videogames isn't anything new, I think maybe social mores have changed our attitude to it somewhat.

On saying that, I suppose if you consider the target demographic for GTA games, it shouldnt be a surprise really.

Sure, when it's just there for the sake of swearing it just comes across as dumb, juvenile and lack of imagination (or an even half-decent writer). Take something like Bulletstorm for example. They must have had some ridiculous brain storming for those idiotic phrases.

In something like GTA it makes sense though as you're dealing with a bunch of low-life characters. You wouldn't expect a real life mobster, hoodlum or gangster talking all prim and proper, would you now?

Another terrible example - Bulletstorm was a parody, and it made it quite clear. Well actually it's a good example, it means they did it well.

I think enough devs have shown by now that they don't know how to handle money. Some showed that they did. But at this point, how do you differentiate between the two unless a previously successful kickstaster dev is making another one?

Swearing's not a fucking shit thing really. But game writers, the cunts, have been using it too pissing excessively recently. I'm off my fucking tits about it.

Can't say I really care about realism, I am just sick of hearing every character saying "mother fucker" like it's going out of fashion for example. Realistic or not it really gets tedious after a while. When it's tedious it's not fun.

That always gets me in these family-friendly films and TV soaps - hard, nasty characters who'd sell their mother for a dime and yet do not utter a 'fuck' or a 'shit'. It seems completely contrary to reality somehow.

Bulletstorm was great fun because it's was a parody. Everything the character said was extremely fuckin stupid which was the fun in it.

I know it wasn't taking itself seriously. No matter, all it did was make my ears bleed. It wasn't really offensive, but just plain stupid.

You don't. I think that by now, it's been made quite clear that you only invest into kickstarters by money you are fine with losing altogether - that's been a thing ever since the beginning really, there's never been a guarantee that what you fund will come out. It's a fault of general public that it got perceived as a preorder service for whatever reason.

I haven't played the new GTA and I never really liked their hip hop/yo bro-style of gangsters anyway but yeah, excessive cursing becomes annoying after a while but I think some of it is necessary to avoid being a prude or taking it so serious as a deeply religious person would, that would likely annoy me more.
