I think being intolerant is a part of human nature. We are all bigots. And sometimes being a bigot, being intolerant of something is good. It's good to be intolerant of racism and sexism, for example. It's good to be intolerant of stupid behavior, for example. And look on the bright side. We are debating instead of flinging poo at each other.

OK, I've not read the whole thread and am playing catch-up here, but this talk of keeping America as an English-speaking country and so on... Are we still just talking about the impact of a single song in a single advert on TV? If it matters that much, the American national identity must be pretty damn fragile.

I don't understand why people refuse to see that the U.S. has never been a country where English was the only spoken language. The United States was founded by immigrants and will always be a destination for immigrants, so the idea that there can be an all-encompassing American culture and language is a joke. Living here does not mean that one must give up their own culture and traditions, and the United States would a very boring place if everyone was forced to assimilate to the so-called American culture.

I do agree that certain situations exist where a mutual language would be beneficial, but I do not think there should be a single language. I believe the education system should be revamped, so that all individuals could become proficient in another language. I know when I was in high school we were only required to take two semesters of a foreign language, and that is barely long enough to cover the basics.

I don't mean that other languages should just not exist anymore or anything like that, just that the world would be better off with a universal/global language like English which should be taught in school, and then secondary languages which would exist for local things. So English would be the language of higher education, business enterprise, administration and government, anything that involves communication across borders.

Hell, it already functions that way de-facto in many countries.

English is already the worldwide language of business and diplomacy. If we ever become a one world government one would assume it would be at the top of the list for unified languages.

Reminding about OP: a person singing in native language got treated very unkindly by fellow citizens. If (northern) Americans (excluding Canadians) like the idea of English supplanting all other languages, I dare say this is wrong.

I also dare say it is wrong to single out and hassle persons based on any "perceived or actual" ethnicity or minority type of thing. Alan Touring killed himself, was this "ok," really?

Rosa Parks, then again, was about grater principles of human dignity - than has little to do with race, and much more so about common morals sense and compassion, really.

Well, unless you are in one of the major cities, I would guess you do not have to make any such decision, because you will not be taking any public transport, but driving.

Then again, in case your laziness encompasses being morbidly obese, I am sure most of those elderly, invalid or pregnant persons will look upon you with compassion, actually, should you venture into public transportation system. :-D

You are correct, not in me being obese, but the only time I use public transportation is when I travel. Although, that is frequently with my job. I was just kidding...I'm not that much of a selfish asshole, but I do see them all the time.
