There's always the old (1990-1991) Buck Rogers games.
Turn based combat, both ground and ship to ship.
No aliens, though, and you are restricted to our own solar system.
First game (Countdown to Doomsday) was good, but the second was made tedious by too much random encounters.

StingingVelvet: A Baldur's Gate/Fallout style purw sci-fi RPG is sadly non-existent, strictly speaking.
I only just realised this when I read your comment :(

Even the Shadowrun game in development doesn't quite qualify either.

Thunderstone: The Star Ocean series is what you are looking for :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Ocean
I recommend these as well, well at least the first 2. Although, for the most part 4 isn't bad. I own the Second Story on ps1 and it is fantastic. I also recommend on that note Xenogears, and to a lesser extent Xenosaga. Only the first Xenosaga appealed to me, but for the sake of the story it's worth playing all 3 Xenosaga games. The soundtrack is fantastic, and for the most part the story is rather good.

@grinninglich The first Star Ocean was on SNES not NES, but I really did like the PSP port; I, actually, own both.

Apparently there was a Spelljammer game, which was an AD&D setting but was all about Galleons in space!
Arcanum is a Fastacy / Steam punk hybrid, Steam Punk is kinda Sci-Fi

Did the poster who said 'Cyberpunk' mean ""Bloodnet: A Cyberpunk Gothic" or "Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller"?
Speaking of cyberpunk, Neuromancer felt a bit RPGish, more than the average adventure at least

Also, has anyone actually said Deus Ex yet?

Crash-lin: And if you would like to try really good old game, try Starflight!

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/starflight_1_2
I agree with Crash-lin, Starflight is an amazing series. Another one is Star Control, specifically Star Control 2. The third game doesn't exist, don't even ask about it...
I wonder if Underrail counts as sci-fi or is more post-apocalyptic. It's not finished yet but looks interesting.

PetrusOctavianus: If you want a classic party based CRPG, try Wizardry 7: Crusaders of the Dark Savant.
Takes places on a different planet with several races of aliens battling each other to become Masters of the Universe. It's all ground based and more of a mix of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, though; no wizzing around in space ships.
Indeed, Wizardry 8 is one of my favourite games.
Has anyone said Outcast yet?
There's no stats as such but you do get upgrades, quest items and meet people to talk to who give you side-quests and such so it's quite RPG-esque in many ways...
*edit* oh and awesome, I forgot to say that it's awesome, quite important that, really

Hello,

X-com is coming out on the 10th october. The original X.-com had strong rpg elements. The turn based combat is one of the most rewarding combat systems of all time. If the successor is only halve as good as the orignal it will be the best squad tactical strategy rpg mix of the decade.

Precursors was mentioned, it is a shooter with rpg elements like mass effect. You can even fly around and fight in your own space ship. Nice little game.

Have a nice day
The best sci-fi RPG's in my opinion are Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday, and Buck Rogers Matrix Cubed (first is better though).

They use the game Gold Box engine that Pools of Radiance and the other AD&D games use. Amazing amount of stats and skills, fun party-building, great story.

Might & Magic introduced a science-fiction plot at the end. In fact the entire plot of M&M was based on the "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".

Yeah, there was actually a table top RPG of Buck Rogers based on the AD&D rules by TSR, I had the box but never played it
Why they decided to license that particular Sci-Fi IP and why they when for classic 50s style Buck and not the 'In the 25th Century' Buck from the 80s (or was it 70's) I'm not sure...
Would Deus Ex count as a Sci-Fi RPG?
