I prefer to play turn-based strategy, and seem to avoid RTS for the simple reason that it seems like there's so much going on and there's so much I'd want to do in a given turn that there's no way I can keep up without undue stress or feeling like I'm barely treading water. I don't know if its because I haven't sussed out the key to fun, relaxing, exciting RTS strategy or if its because I just don't see the merits of an RTS over a TBS. So here's a question for all you GOGers:

Which do you prefer and why? Can you give me some examples? What is the best GOG RTS and TBS?
TBS. Why? More time to think about next move.
best TBS on gog

Master of Orion 1 2
Master of magic

:rulez:

i prefer tbs when there is a micromanagement on the gameplay

Turn-based. I suck at RTS's.
And best RTS on GOG:

Original War.

+ You can speed up/down whole game, even pause it.

Try it.

EDIT: I like both RTS and TBS. For different reasons.

Lexor: TBS. Why? More time to think about next move.
This sums it up for me, though I do like some RTS games. My faves by genre:

Turn-based: Conquest of the New World Deluxe

RTS: King's Bounty: The Legend (maybe not a 'pure' RTS in that the combats are turn based, but the overlay game has the RTS element).

I dont think so :P You can move without turns, true, but game has no other normal RTS elements.
Same like MrWilli. I'm not good in fast-paced games. Especially real fast games, as example StarCraft or WarCraft, are very hard to play for me. It's not only to keep the overview, but also the lack of precision. Also I can hardly follow and keep the overview with too much animated graphics., as example Command & Conquer Generals. It's nice to have so many animations like exploding buildings, but it's too much for me.

Slower RTS, especially with a pause mode, are ok. I need sometimes time to think and to get an overview over the situation.

About gogs catalog:
TBS: Battle Isle Pack - Many games also with different gamestyles
RTS: Settlers 2

Okay, Settlers 2 is more a buildup game, but that's the problem with RTS - it has so many sub-genres.

i dont prefer any of the two per se, it all depends, real time looks a lot more like action, so if i want to see the war unfold i will go for real time, turn based is a lot better if its crucial that i want to really think about what i want to do, also there are games like europa universalis 3, where it is real time, but feels turn based
RTS on GOG: Ground Control (actually it's more like tactical)
RTS not on GOG: Homeworld (this is absolutely the best in my opinion)

TBS: Age of Wonders series then Heroes of Might & Magic & King's Bounty series

Turn based for me. I used to prefer RTS. It used to be one of my favorite genres. Over time my tastes have changed. Now not only do I prefer turn based, but I don't even like real time strategy anymore. Its not isolated to these genres either. In general I prefer slower paced games now. Its not that I cant handle fast paced or anything. I do just as well with them as I always have. Its just that I would rather sit back with a cup of tea and play something more relaxing than play something intense while chugging down cans of Mountain Dew left and right.

The two are obviously completely different from each other. Different genres really.
I don't think I've played any of the ones on GoG, but my favourite RTSs are Starcraft I & II.
Fantastic games in their own right and if you're a fan or RTS, you have to play them.

Favourite TBS - Civilization 3.
This game is simply a new level of brilliance.
I freain' love turn based, and although I've tried a lot of the classic real time startegies, I just can't get into them.

I love King's Bounty, and I can plan which enemy creature I want to take out first so they won't damage a certain creature of mine, etc.

I feel like I don't control anything with real time; I feel like I click and then the AI takes over. :/
I prefer TBS, cause I suck at most RTS, only RTS I really like is the Total War series. In a TBS I feel like having more control over all the things happening. Another think I like about TBS: On most LAN-Party´s we have a HOMM 3 game running for like the whole time and play it in between the other games.
Another turn-based vote. There always seems to be so much going on in RTS and more often than not my reactions just can't keep up with the stuff the game throws at you. Or, to put it another way: I suck.

Turn based gives you time to think and plan, and seems to be more about strategy than simply who-can-move-their-mouse-faster?

And the king of TBS? It has to be Mr Sid Meier, creator of a rather famous series called Civilization. Though for me his finest game was Alpha Centauri (even though I believe Brian Reynolds had more say in it than him. Please correct me if I'm wrong here)
