And spiders....and small monkeys......and worms. 0.o
Is co-op recommended as a first playthrough? Or does that ruin the atmosphere?

And midwives. Don't forget the midwives. (Which is inconvenient because one of my friends' mom is a midwife.)

I've never played co-op, but i've heard it makes the game less difficult/scary. A good part of what sets up the game's creepy/tense atmosphere is the fact that you're all alone on a ship full of monsters that are trying to kill you. Playing with someone else takes a bit of the "scare factor" away, imo.

Of course if you play on the hardest difficulty and/or increase the game's respawn rate it might be fun.

I dunno why, but they didn't scare me as much. Maybe it was because they were(seemingly) lesser in number than the constantly re-spawning spiders/monkeys/worms in some areas. :\

(Plus the damn sound the spiders[and to a lesser extent the monkeys] made was creepy as fsck.)

You wanna talk about scary? Remember the robots in some areas? Now THEY were scary. The small, skinny ones scared me because I knew they could blow me to bits, and the bigger ones caused a good amount of damage if you didn't hide behind cover.

semu: Should the first System Shock be played before starting SS2?
It's not a requirement.

I had always thought that ideally people should, as there are definitely some elements which you will appreciate more if you have already played the original; but in retrospect I'm no longer sure.

In my books SS1 is unquestionably the better game; and as good as the sequel was, I was quite disappointed about certain aspects which would not bother someone in the slightest if they had not played its predecessor.

So whichever way around you play them, you'd probably enjoy some things more and some things less.

I suspect there's probably also a fair chance that the game you play first will be the one you like the most.

The Midwives freaked me out more for their background and general grotesquery. Once I got over the "AGH CREEPY THING SHOOTING LASERS" phase, they were actually pretty easy to take out.

Yeah, the robots are scarier than one might initially think. Especially since they first start becoming common in the areas where you usually start running out of stuff. Although I found you can stunlock the big guy by whacking him on the nose.

You definitely want to play it solo to begin with.

I am enjoying watching it rise through the ranks as well. :)

On the front page, near the top 10 games, you can click on "view all 513 games" or something, then there is a bit that says "browse games by XXX". I think one option is date added, another is best selling. Choose best selling. Voila! :)
*yawdrop* Didn't see this one comming. Impressive!

Oh myyy!
Good job, GOG! You got the ultimate prize. I don't think there's anything left for you to do now. You can go home.

Joking aside, I'm looking forward to finally playing this tonight.
