Shadow of Chernobyl + Clear Sky + Call of Pripyat up to 70% off!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, the phenomenally immersive FPS survival horror series set in the terrifyingly believable radioactive "Zone" surrounding the explosion site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, is available up to 70% off on GOG.com. That's only $14.97 for the set of three for the next 72 hours.

Not many people truly understand what it means to be a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. We're Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers, and Robbers. Basically, what each of us is, is a bit of a soldier, a bit of a thief, a bit of a hunter, a bit of a nutjob, and a full-time basterd. Imagine what's happening in our heads. The Zone is calling for us ahead, new locations and unknown threats, spatial holes and monsters hiding in the fog, pitch-black nights and saving rays of a rising sun. You try to avoid anomalies and hide from blowouts, discover the Zone and collect artifacts, cure radioactive irradiation and fight for any stalker faction you like! This is the life, right? If only it didn't end so promptly, ever so often.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series delivers one of the most immersive and enthralling experiences in the history of first-person shooters. Calling it a "shooter", however, might be a bit of a stretch. The games' focus leans mostly towards exploration and stealth. In most cases, it's best to avoid encounters rather than face the dangers head-on. The Chernobyl exclusion zone is full of things that could kill you in an eyeblink. Strange creatures, physics-defying phenomena, not to mention the other men bold or insane enough to venture into the heart of eastern-european Twilight Zone. The competition is ruthless, as the prizes are great--the fascinating artifacts found in the forbidden land yield unbelievable prizes on the black market. If you think you have what it takes to become one of the fabled S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s, the whole story of the Chernobyl Zone opens before you: the original Shadow of Chernobyl, the prequel Clear Sky, and the sequel Call of Pripyat. All three games come with high-quality soundtracks encoded in lossless FLAC format.

For the next 72 hours, that is until Sunday, February 9, at 10:59 GMT, you can get the entire S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series 70% off, that is for only $14.97. Separately, the games come with 50% off discount for that time.

EDIT:
Now, that the release special offer has expired, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are priced at $19.99, $9.99, and $19.99 for Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat respectively. A permanent 20% off series discount still applies, if you get all three at the same time.
Even though I already have the original retail releases of these games, having the GOG installer will be nice!

These were some of my absolute favorite games. They all have pretty glaring flaws and bugs, yet all 3 of them proved to be some of the most immersive and fun FPS games I ever played even in their original 1.0 retail-buggy-as-hell state. I was more than willing to play through these games even when they were crashing every 20 to 60 minutes and randomly bluescreen(ing) my computer all while running between 20 and 30 FPS on low settings.

Cheers!

Outstanding release, great promo.

INSTABUY!
(been wanting to say this ever since I joined GOG 8 months ago... all I needed was the right game(s) to come along :-))
I love you GOG. You are the best.
Oh, Hell, yes!

question: does the GOG release come with Russian voiceovers, or am going to have to mess around creatively with this just as I did with my Steam version?

I'm going to assume yes.

tszakacs: Great! I have them on Steam, but it was a nightmare to make them run. One of them still doesnt't work properly. Please confirm if these releases run well!

zaine-h: I don't know about the other two but Shadow of Chernobyl is running just fine on my laptop, Win 7 64 bit. :)
It was Shadow of Chernobyl that didn't Work on Steam. Thank you for your confirmation!
This is what I love about GOG, not only getting the prepatched versions with the menus and normal stuff but the soundtracks and the convenient fact that you can download the game from your account. Too bad that the money from this only goes to the head honcho of GSC to fill his pockets instead of developing a proper sequel to this wondrous series
Now if they only got the Goldbox SSI games I would be in heaven
Edit I have the disc versions already installed but could anybody confirm that using the russian installer has spoken russian with english subtitles?

elendiel7: I installed the french installer, and yet it was in english.

When I look back on my library, the tab is set to french.

Did I do something wrong?
There is a setup program in the Start menu where you can change the language of the game :)
As far as games in a similar style and setting, I have both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas but just can't manage to immerse myself in them. Would anybody be so kind as to do a quick pros/cons list of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games and how they compare to Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas?

JudasIscariot: 1. For the most part, yes, if you see it, you can explore it :)

2. I don't know as I can't imagine playing shooters with a game pad :O
Me neither, it puts a serious hampering on one's ability. I was reading an article a few months back where Microsoft was considering allowing multiplayer between the PC version of one of their games and the Xbox 360 version of the game so that you could have cross platform multiplayer but they were concerned about the fairness between a keyboard+mouse combination on a PC and the Xbox 360 controller so they did a case study. They allegedly got together a bunch of expert Xbox players with the game controller and non-expert players on the PC and found that the mediocre players totally annihilated the expert Xbox players simply due to having the better and more accurate control of the keyboard+mouse combination. If memory serves correct they did not release the game with cross platform multiplayer as a result. I've attempted to play FPS games with a game controller several times and found it to be one of the most awkward possible ways to control a FPS game, you just don't have the same level of freedom and control, swiftness of turning, nor accuracy. As a result, many console versions of games also have to be dumbed down so as to not be insanely difficult compared to their PC counterparts.

I do like using a controller with some games like Tomb Raider though but even that is a little awkward for certain things I find.
Here is some coverage from someone who took the Chernobyl tour in 2010 from Phoronix:

The modern Fallout games are sandbox RPGs with shooter trappings, while the Stalker are the opposite; they are shooters with sandbox and RPG elements. I like the modern Fallouts but they are too western for me; with all sorts of "chosen one" and "save the world" story lines. European games tend to focus more on the setting itself and how your character has to survive the situation. Their games feel more lived in, dirty and realistic and alongside the Souls games (Demons and Dark) are truly the very best games of this generation
Oh my GOD! GOG i mean GOD the best site! Amazing! First day purchase!

The Fallout universe is a parody of the 70's retro-futuristic world, it's sort of an « atomic-punk » world ( by analogy with steam-punk ). The situations often have a bit of comical, nonsensical humour to them, and blatantly wouldn't work in real life. So much for suspension of disbelief. In Fallout, don't think science, think Science! when you encounter things, and the people's reactions are deliberately exacerbated and caricatural.

The Stalker universe, on the other hand, is OUR universe. It's largely realistic, with the caveat that you're visiting a Zone where something occurred that broke down the known laws of science, so anomalous phenomenons appears from time to time, and the Humans desperately try to understand how that Zone works. But on the whole, the accent is put on realism. The Zone itself is modelled after the real-life town of Mednogorsk, which was a clone of Chernobyl ( during the Soviet era, towns and village were mass-produced on the same plans ). With the Complete add-ons, Pavel went so far as to use one of his travel to Ukraine to go to Mednogorsk and take a hell of a lot of photos himself to use them as textures, further adding to realism. Basically you're travelling in « our world after the collapse of civilisation ».

In short,
• Fallout is a pulp magazine world where zany things happen
• Stalker is a realistic world where strange and sometime gruesome things happen

Do not hesitate to play both, their goal, setting and game mechanics are so different that the experience is absolutely not the same. :)

Oh, and if you're reluctant to try Complete for your first run, I recommend you use the lattest Zone Reclamation Project ( a.k.a. ZRP ) instead, in « Vanilla Mode » to iron out almost all the remaining bugs.

I also recommend that you read the short novel Roadside Picnic, available for free on the Net ( you GOG team should try to add it in the bonuses, it's the story that started it all :) ) : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadside_Picnic#External_links

And also, that you watch the the STALKER movie : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalker_(1979_film)
