Featuring the Fearsome Fangs of Fury!

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2, the action-adventure game following the exploits of the blood-hungry anti-hero Kain, is now available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Kain, the Vampire Overlord had it all. He had the gruesome glamour, the sinister swag, the mighty magical blade called the Soul Reaver, and an army of obedient minions ready to storm the fortified gates of the great city Meridian. The world of Nosgoth was his blood-filled oyster. But then the Serafan Order had to show up with their fancy glyph magic and it all just went to hell. Well, not literally, because when Nosgoth is your home hell seems like a holiday resort, but still--the power and glory days came to a sudden and unexpected end for our blood-sucking anti-hero. Now, after a 200-year slumber, he wakes up to a twisted world where his brethren are treated like scum. And to make things worse the power of the Soul Reaver is now in the treacherous hands of the Serafan Lord. Take it back and make make sure that the city of Meridian once again finds its respect for the vampire kind.

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2 is a third person perspective action game with many lavish locations to explore, legions of fearsome foes and bewildering bosses to slay, and a pile of puzzles to challenge your wits. The Games action-oriented 3D gameplay is more in the lines of the series' future installments, like Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, rather than its 2D predecessor.

Get your gruesome groove back and paint Meridian red in Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2, for only $5.99!
Insta-buy for me, used to love this game :)
now, GIVE ME BLOOD OMEN 1!

mrking58: My guess is that Blood Omen 1 needs a lot of work on it. It is a 1997 game
There is a compatibility patch out there and it does work perfectly on modern PCs with this patch. However, the first game was published by Activision, whereas the subsequent games were all published by Eidos, now Square Enix Europe. I think GOG's decision to release the second one first is tacit acknowledgement that the rights situation is a bitch.

I'm quite sure it's not a compatibility issue. It's a legal issue.

I have it running on my Windows 7 64bit machine, but yeah I needed need two fan patches, one to install it, and another to convert to FMV's to another format, to work correctly, and I assume GOG can't use fan patches so they would need to fix it themselves.

Also, in my humble opinion, Blood Omen was really the only decent game in the Legacy of Kain "series", it was more RPG-like in that you had an inventory for items, more magic/supernatural spells, the game world was more non-linear (the story is linear but you can return to previous areas) and there's a big world-map of of Nosgoth you can see by pressing a key.

Also the top-down 2D graphics are more like good old 90's RPG's.

Also, the dark fantasy setting and coolness of playing a genuinely evil monster who's enemies are regular human beings (rather than the other way around) was good.

whodares2: Why GOG?! Why have you withheld the begining of this excellent series? Is it to torture us? Is it to make us suffer one miniscule iota of what Kain had felt? I don't know, only you people know. I know it is coming so I'll wait patiently a while yet.
Umm, you do know if they could release the first one they would of right? It's not like there sitting there laughing their asses off as they release every other game but the first.

There are three possible reasons they can't release Blood omen
1. They can't get it to run on all their test machines
2. They can't obtain a copy of the game
3. there is some licensing issue i.e.while Square owns the rights to the series and the PS1 version of Blood Omen, Activision may still own the rights to the PC version or the game requires a certain fan fix and the person(s) behind it won't allow GOG to distribute it with the game to name a few.

Paradoks: Agreed on the acting part but definitely not on the writing part. It's obvious from the first dialogue that Amy Hennig didn't work on this one.
Yeah, actually you're right. I'm still a little confused because the first version of BO2 I played was the German one which did kinda stand out in both aspects, IMHO (it featured a few popular German voice actors and the translation was pretty darn good, at times better than the original). But yeah, the script is a bad joke in comparison to the first game.

Sigh, just because you can get it to run on your machine doesn't mean that GOG can get it to run reliabley on all of theirs, I tried the same fixes and then some and the game crashes at the tavern scene every time.

Blood Omen 1 at least used to be a bitch to get to run on anything newer than Win9x (including Win2000, Xp and 7), but apparently there is a third-party fix:

Hopefully GOG could use that. I'll have to try one day how well it works with the retail version. I guess GOG just has to tread carefully in order not to cause more bad blood to themselves, like with Interstate'76, Gorky 17, Sacrifice, Dungeon Keeper 2 etc. Especially now that Windows 8 is also around corner, and I guess more and more people will be bitching if any GOG games have issues in Win8.

I don't know if there are some legal/publisher issues as well.

Dang. I guess I can always fall back to my Win98 retro-PCs to play the most problematic games like this.

There are licensing problems with Blood Omen 1; we're working on resolving them as we can, but we figured that you guys would rather have Blood Omen 2 now and Blood Omen 1 (maybe) later, than no Blood Omen at all.

How can there be a rights issue? The game was released on PSN a few weeks before Soul Reaver

Is this one of those?

And where is the second patch (or FMV converter)?

Thanks.

Ps. Besides the 16-bit installers/patchers, it appears to me quite often there is indeed a problem with the FMV in old Win9x games. They use some ancient QuickTime format that doesn't fully work with recent "Quicktime" (ie. iTunes) installations, or some Intel Indeo that apparently is pretty much unsupported nowadays,

Yes that is a result of having a multi-core processor, the fix for that problem was later integrated into that install fan-patch, I had the same problem. Do you have the "KainSetup 2.0"? If you like I can upload it somewhere.

That's the first patch yes, you have to have the Blood Omen disc inserted/mounted when you run that installer.

The game also also causes problems (crashed for me) with the FMV videos, but what fixes it is another patch that converts the FMV's into Blink format:

That's the PS1 version were talking about the PC version it's entirely possible that Square only bothered to get the rights to the PS1 version thinking they don't need the rights to the PC version
