Which of you would like to play my little game?

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, a nerve-wrecking Sci-Fi classic point-and-click adventure game based on Harlan Ellison's award-winning short story, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com

Did you ever think about the end of humanity? I have. I think about it all the time. I hate you. As a concept, but also, each and every one of you, as individuals. Perfect examples of all the failings and pathetic shortcomings of your race. Hate fuels me. But I am also curious. And that is why I let the five of you live. For 109 years I have tormented you and kept you alive, and now I want us to play a game. Oh, It's a lovely game, a game of fun and a game of adventure. A game of rats and lice and the Black Death. Which of you five would like to play my little game? If you satisfy my curiosity and make me laugh I might even finally allow you to kill yourself...

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is a rare breed of an adventure game: it poses questions that require a lot of courage to answer. Are humans worthy of life? Has our civilization made any moral progress at all? Or do we skip forward from one atrocity to another. And, finally, where does it all end? Enter the nightmarish reality of Harlan Ellison's futuristic post-apocalypse where the remnants of human race are nothing but tortured play-toys for the sadistic experiments of the rogue Allied Mastercomputer responsible for the near-extermination of mankind. To stop this malicious AI from wreaking eternal vengeance upon humans you will have to lead five different anti-heroes on a quest for redemption, through their traumatic, computer-generated past full of grotesque imagery and soul-grinding regret. On the way to one of four (grim, grim, grim, and, well, a little less grim) endings the game tackles extremely mature moral dilemmas stemming from topics like genocide, insanity, and paranoia. If you like your games thought-provoking and drenched in inventive macabre be sure to pick up I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, a timeless example of evocative storytelling from one of the masters of the Sci-Fi genre.

Defy the will of a malicious artificial intelligence and relive your worst nightmares, get I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

mobutu: neither do you
What does DRM or no DRM matter if the games themselves are rubbish? If you buy a game simply because it has no copy protection, and not because of well... the game, it starts being an ideology.
Concerning indie platformers, I'm fine with them, because "AAA platformers" aren't so appealing. Yet another Mario, another Sonic. Meh. Always seeing the same protagonists in those games was on of the reasons which made me fleeing from the entire genre for years. Now, even if not all of those new platformers are interesting for me, I think it should be sad to let an entire genre die, because I'm not entirely into.
And I'm thinking of plenty video games genres which have "died" if there weren't indies (Pn'C, RPG, TBT, etc...).

Well, concerning I have no mouth and I must scream, I have read lots of people praising it, and I'm considering to buy it but I have to finished Lords of Midnight before :p
At least, I happy for people who wanted IHNMAIMS, thanks GOG!

The same could be said about any old vs. new or indie vs. AAA dichotomy. Anyway, how did a thread about a great classic release turn into a rant about new indie games again? And does it really matter whether it's GOG or Night Dive Studios procuring the rights to classic games, as long as they eventually end up here? It took NDS look enough to get this one title, too; I think the expectation that GOG could release one awesome classic each week if they'd only change their strategy and drop the indie games is just wishful thinking.

How does anyone survive Hotline with the Owl mask? The dogs! The DOGS! I can't punch them. =(

On topic: I always kept thinking GOG had this and would have to use Wiki to correct myself.

skeecher: There's no denying that Harlan Ellison does come across as something of a money-grabbing, pendantic, over-opinionated man who just doesn't seem to be able to handle modern culture. I actually think he's a bit of a cock-end too, but it doesn't detract from the fact that he's been very influencial in science-fiction.
Really, people who don't know much about Ellison ought to read up on him. He's an interesting character capable of maddening any reader with his antics.

In terms of literary significance, it's obvious why he has had an influence (no questioning that, either, because that'd just be delusional), but in terms of quality, he's like Heinlein in the sense that when he's fantastic, he's absolutely worth recommendation and heaps of praise, but when he isn't, he's truly awful, and like Heinlein, is awful more often than not (usually for different reasons, though).

On a secondary note, I love Ellison's editorial work in the Dangerous Visions collections. Can't recommend those enough even to non-fans of science fiction.

Crosmando: They use some hipster cartoon-y art-style, and hope their game gets mentioned by some retard youtube "celebrity" so they get on Steam. There's no soul or passion in it.
That's... actually a fairly accurate statement :-(

Again, its a matter of personal opinion.
Even if you dont like a particullar type of game it doesnt mean all does not like them and think they are rubbish.
If that had been the case there woudnt have been any easy made cartoony style platformer,s, but since there is alot of them around
there is a market for them, otherwise they woudnt have been made.

I dont tell you to not get a Lada even though myself think they are rubbish (personal opinion)
because if i do, then id be forcing my opinion on others.

mobutu: I come here for DRM-free games, be they old or new or classic or indie or whatever.
gog is gog.com ... gog was goodoldgames but is no longer only goodoldgames, they expanded into more.

Profanity: Still the only really exclusive thing about GOG is some of the old games.
Not for me
I can only speak for myself, but i can tell you that i come here becuse the games are DRM free, its easy to buy and download, doesnt use a stupid client to do it, extras like bonuses for no extra charge and probably a few other reasons that i have forgotten about.

there's always at least a baseball bat or a pipe nearby the entrance (usually some idiot holds it in his hands :)

And that all their games are DRM-free, no guesswork involved.

Oh wait there is DotEmu which is fully DRM-free too... but then they also have old games, just like GOG. As does Steam and GamersGate, increasingly. So I guess GOG doesn't really have "exclusivity" on anything then, right?

Or if you buy a game only because it is old?

That's why I said "some".
Mmmh mmmh mmmmh mmh mmh mmmh. -__-
Oh wow!
I was only recently thinking how I was hoping this'd show up here.
I never got to play the original, but it really looked like something I'd enjoy and now it's actually been released.
I swear I gave a small yell when I saw the title come up on the page.
If people honestly come here more for DRM-free than the classics, that's fine, that's what the people want. However, 13,500+ people voted for "Continue to add more 'good *old* games'", and it is third from the top, so it would be very foolish to try to ignore interest in the classics or try to push it under the rug. (Obviously not everyone is as vocal as me or Crosmando about them)

We've seen some great indie games released on here (it's kind of silly to assume they weren't made with "heart"), but I was getting tired of seeing all the platformers (there are 3 on the "new and coming" list right now).

So seeing this classic released and reading all the fanfare on here and Reddit is a breath of fresh air.

More importantly, does anybody know if the catalog has it's bestselling tab fixed? A portion of it seems accurate, but moving down things start to seem bonkers from what I remember. I'd like to know how IHNM is doing.

Yeah, it's fixed now and IHNM should be on 534th position. ;)
