A dreamy platformer with a world-shifting, identity-changing twist.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, a beautiful platformer that delivers a blast from the past while remaining modern, juicy, and delightfully fresh, is now available on GOG.com for only $13.49! That's 10% off the regular price until Tuesday, October 30.

They say that there's only one way to understand a teenage girl: you have to be one. In case of Giana this can prove to be even more difficult, as there's much more to her than meets the eye. But the same thing can be said about almost every single thing or being inhabiting the dream realm in which the girl is trapped. Have you ever been trapped inside a dream, wanting to wake up? A dream in which every time you thought you broke free you just fell deeper into the recurring delusion? That's what happened to our heroine. But luckily, her predicament allowed her to unleash an alternate, feisty persona and harness the ability to flip from nightmare to a dream and back, just like flipping a coin. That's more than a fair fighting chance against the twisted odds.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams takes all you love about classic platformers: jumping platforms, stomping on enemies' heads, solving simple puzzles, collecting shiny tokens, and searching for secrets--and puts it in a unique double-vision environment. While the blonde "cute" Giana travels through the dark land of nightmares, her redhead "punky" alter-ego blasts through a much lighter and cheerful dream realm. The player is given the ability to dynamically switch between the two worlds and characters at will, using both personas' unique skills and taking advantage of each world's slightly different layout. It's like playing two games at once (which in most cases doesn't make much sense apart from being a nice party trick; but here, it makes for a challenging and original gameplay).

Make yourself a nice pot of strong coffee, cause you're not getting any sleep tonight, while you run and jump through the fantastic realms of a teenage girl's fancy in Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, for only $13.49.
Well back to playing this game.

When it was brought up at the KS thread, I barely paid any attention to it. Then I tried the demo, and liked it enough to preorder. Now, playing the full game, I'm totally in love with it. Platformers rarely get me hooked. Only 2 in recent times have - VVVVVV and Trine. Even SMB didn't cut it for me.

Funny how things work.

SMB kinda hurts after a while. I probably would have stuck with it if I didn't feel the need to grab those damn bandaids! That took some crazy reflexes.
I have to admit that I haven't really been following this project. But it seems strange to me that the game would be released so soon after the end of the Kickstarter campaign. It has only been about six weeks, so the game must have been practically finished when they ran the Kickstarter. Did they even need the money, and if so, how did they spend $180,000 within a month?
I have backed this game on Kickstarter, and therefor have it on Steam. Must say it is an outstanding platformer that I can highly recommend!

Maybe this answers your questions:
(from the Project Giana KS-Site)

"Why crowdfunding?

So, who are we? What does a company named Black Forest Games have to do with The Great Giana Sisters? Well, not too long ago, we were still called Spellbound. Spellbound was founded by a man named Armin Gessert, and that man made the original Giana game. Unfortunately, Spellbound went belly-up a few months ago, but we’re back on our feet with a new name. We're self-run now, with the most senior members of our studio at the helm (and that’s not just the management – we’ve got our top programmers and artists there too!)

Back in the day, we set aside a large chunk of our savings for Project Giana, but that took a hit from the insolvency. We had to re-buy most of our old assets, and we haven’t released a game as Black Forest Games yet that could cover the running costs.

The first thing we did was to head over to Kickst– wait. Actually, the first thing we did was to square our chins and approach a publisher, but the conditions weren’t... favorable. We could cut content, but to be honest, the game would be too short. We were about to shelve the game, hoping to complete it after releasing a paid project or two, but then the thought struck us – maybe people would already be interested in playing the game, and willing to pitch in? Project Giana’s budget would normally be too high for crowdfunding (barring the Kickstarter superstars), but we’re nearly done and would only need a fraction of the total to complete the game.

Worst case, if our project doesn’t reach the funding goal, you won’t have to pay your pledge and we’ll release Giana some other day, if we find a publisher with good conditions or save up enough money. But… should we hit our goal, we can afford another month of development right now, and complete the basic version of the game."

Great review. I agree with every point made in there. The challenging difficulty actually makes the game so much more fun to play, yet I never thought any one level was really unfair.

Do you already know when the Halloween Extra will be available here on GOG?

Edit: I already downloaded the update that is available here but I don't think it's the same as the above mentioned patch. At least I couldn't find the Halloween level. (Maybe I'm just too stupid to find it?)
