spinefarm: Enough with this Steam turf already. The only thing GOG can do to make the site better is selling bundles for game series and this is the only thing missing for them. 50% off is enough.
Steam are making sales like that to destroy the competition not to make profit ;)

spindown: This is not about what you and I want personally. I'm actually willing to pay extra for DRM-free games and interesting extras - up to a point. I'm simply saying that I believe GOG will have a hard time selling their new games if they don't adapt their pricing to the fierce competition in the indie and newer game markets. It doesn't matter why Steam, Amazon.com, Humble Indie Bundle etc. keep offering such massive discounts - it's simply a fact of life that their aggressive pricing will make offerings like HOMM V for $20 a very hard sell.

Just take a look at some of the most recent releases on GOG. Within the last 6 months or so you could buy many of them at extremely low prices from GOG's competitors:

- Assassin's Creed: 87% off on Amazon.com (DRM free)
- Heroes of Might and Magic V Bundle: 75% off on Steam (+ free Dark Messiah game)
- The Whispered World: 75% off on Steam
- Trine: 80% off on Steam, pay what you want Humble Bundle (DRM free)
- Machinarium: 75% off on Steam, pay what you want Humble Bundle (DRM free)
- Darwinia: pay what you want Humble Bundle (DRM free)
Assasin's Creed on Amazon.com - US customers only and yes it is a bit overprices(Ubisoft is selling it for 9.99 euro)
Machinarium - 10$ at the Dev site(normal version)
Trine - $9.99 at dev site
The Whispered World - 19,99€ on Steam
HOMM V + 2 expansions - 30 euro on total from UbiStore ;)
Darwinia - 8$ at Dev site
You see my point?

The pricing show that GOG don't choose the prices. They are working only on negotiating the promos from the devs/publishers. Thay can't go to Ubisoft and say: Dudes we want to sell AC1 for 2.5$ cause Amazon sell it on that price... If they do that you will see AC1 here around 30th of February :D

Paingiver: a game which has never been drm-free until now, released as drm-free!
avatar
Darling_Jimmy: I was under the impression it was already DRM-free. I might be mistaken. If you are right then I agree it is a wonderful accomplishment and I tip my hat.
Different info on different sites -
GamersGate show DRM: Tages
Amazon no info(probably DRM-free with less extras)
Steam - steam client for installation(it's a type of drm)
GreenManGaming - Capsule

Even it is DRM-Free elsewhere it is still looking cool on your Shelf and if they release now the other games from the series + Prince of Persia series I will be a happy camper :)

Amazon version is not DRM-free. I don't know exactly but don't expect that Tages removed on Steam or GreenManGaming version too.Steamworks and Capsule is already drm even Tages removed.

I think this is a starting point. Newer Ubisoft titles are coming to GOG for Drm-free. We can expect AC2, other Prince of Persia series soon.

AC2 is Uplay. Will never be on GOG.

Oh, very sad. What is it? Some kind of "you have to log in to this server to play" thing?
Thing is the newer Ubisoft games use the Uplay client. They may have removed the always on connection whilst playing AC II for example but you still have to sign in to Uplay before being able to access your game. Whilst playing Splinter Cell Conviction Single Player just before Christmas I got kicked to desktop when their Uplay service went down.......go figure

I do think the 2 Ubi games are a little expensive, you can buy the disc versions of those 2 games a lot cheaper. I have AC directors cut on the Focus Essentials label (This label actually has something to do with Ubisoft, for those in the UK they usually have the carousel type shelves in PC World, Staples, Homebase etc - you know the ones I mean!).

I have AC installed and I dont have to put the disc in to play and it didnt go through any online activation on first startup. Essentially you are paying a fair bit extra for Avatars, soundtracks and wallpapers which can be found on the net free (not talking about pirating the stuff here either).

Uplay itself isn't DRM it's just extra goodies for playing their game online. There is DRM in the PC Uplay loader though

AC activation check is at 1hour 2hours and 6 hours of gameplay. The soundtrack has never been free and costs a not very pleasant amount

Yeah you get Uplay points for doing certain things ingame which can be used to buy stuff ingame, on AC II for PS3 I unlocked the crypt area in the town with your big house at the back for free using the points, also got Alatairs Armour and a few other things free using the points. It could be something like get 10 stealth kills for X amount of points etc

Thing is, that can be patched if the dev allows it.

That means nothing. And since AC is already on GOG, there is indeed a chance for ACII and the rest of the series to arrive on GOG sooner or later.

Never heard of that. I can play my retail copy without any internet connection at all.
I really hope this forum won't become full of fanboys and will continue to be a place where you can find responsible customers. I'd agree with a slight price increase for the goodies and the DRM-free game, but AC1 costs 53% more on GOG compared to Steam. That is a HUGE increase. I don't think people should buy it just because of the GOG label.

just to note the 11 track "official" AC soundtrack is currently $9-11 on most places that sell it
I don't care about the prices really. It's the fact that I don't have to install anything extra just to play my games. I just install and play...like in the old days.
I'm looking at the Steam page for Assassin's Creed 1 and it is the same price as it is here on GoG, but lacks soundtrack, artbook, and those extra goodies.

Maybe it is different in other countries and I don't know it, but here it shows $19.99 both on GoG and Steam. Quite frankly I'd rather get the game here right now considering you get a free game for the promo and you get the soundtrack to boot.

I like GoG for their download and play method, something Steam doesn't do that well. Most of the time trying to play a new game on Steam is nigh impossible due to overload on the servers, and when a TF2 update is out, the entire service is brought to a screeching halt. Steam's offline mode is also atrocious, but for someone that actively has an Internet connection this isn't an issue that often.

In Europe it's 9.99 euros, so most people assumed it would be the same price in dollars for the US. It is cheaper in Europe on Steam than on GOG.com, but it lacks the extras.

"unable to start not enough EMS" "Do you want to create a boot disk?" "Insert disk 7 of 14"

That were the old days...
