Tulivu: Am I wrong to imagine these guys as a bunch of snobby little brats that like to cause trouble just because they can? Who has nothing better to do than petty crime for no benefit? Smoking crack would be more constructive.
*They* smoking crack would be more constructive for *me*, because *they* could choke and die.

OmegaX: Different situations. Tell me something, would you trust your money to a bank that doesn't use encryption for your online transactions and stores your username and password in a plain text file stored in a server without a firewall?
avatar
Taleroth: My level of trust is irrelevant to the immorality of criminal actions against them and their customers.

As you would say, "different situations."
Ok, I'll grant you that but one could argue that developing IT systems that don't comply with the minimum security standards to save on development costs is just as immoral, specially for a company such as Sony that has the resources to hire experts for the job.

It'd be an argument that fails Hanlon's Razor.

Email, birthday, location.

I think GOG are safe for now, since the hackers go specifically for companies that keep CC information, and other sensitive information, in their system.

And isn't the location just whatever you feel like saying? So it isn't even necessarily correct.

Yup, birthday is optional too, so your personal info is quite safe with GOG.

Unless they hack the transaction servers, but afaik, another company manages this, and not GOG?
It's not as bad as when the group hacked Sony and then leaked user data. Oh, but since they were able to break in of course they claim it's all Sony's fault.

The sad part is this crap isn't even new. Practically half of online culture came from sociopathic Internet vigilantes that would raid or DoS stuff they didn't like. Only difference is that in the past targets were mostly web pages or forums run by people the vigilantes thought were too nerdy or raising too much drama.

Petty crime? Stealing the personal information of 77 million users and, as I understand, some 12000 CC info is petty crime? Selling personal information is how Facebook made and continues to make all those nice millions. If they find some buyers, and I doubt there's no takers, they'll make millions. I wouldn't call that petty crime for no benefit. And besides... there's always the 'do it for the lulz'.
I'm just happy I'm not one of those 77 million users who had their personal information stolen tbh.

That actually answers my question. I don't know how these guys operate so I personify them with the personalities of children that I have run into on COD and Halo.
