If you like Science Fiction, look no further. You can't possibly go wrong with these two addictive Sci-Fi games, each with a cult following of its own.

First, there was [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/star_control_1_2]Star Control, a turn-based strategy game with an addictive real-time arcade combat mode called Mêlée. This was essentially a relatively close-quarters duel between two spaceships. The most impressive thing about this mode, and the game in general, was that, somehow, the game's creators managed to make the dozen or so race-specific ship types completely different from each other, yet at the same time balanced.

Star Control 2 added even more races and ships to the fray, while retaining balance in the Mêlée mode, but changed the underlying gameplay considerably. The sequel was turned into more of a space-faring adventure game, with quests, diplomacy and character progression in the form of ship upgrades. The gameplay is as addictive as ever and the storyline is both good and believable, with tons of memorable characters, races and humor that will make you go back to this game again and again.
I'd forgotten how much I loved Fwiffo and his race <3
People are complaining about Star Control graphics? Seriously? They're just fine to me.

If you wanna complain about graphics, go play IBM PC or C64 Starflight.

Besides, we don't play good old games because we're graphics whores. Maybe it's the gameplay, maybe it's the characters, maybe it's the setting, maybe it's the story...but something's more endearing about them that aged pixels cannot detract from, and I don't mean nostalgia! (Remember, I played UQM 0.4.0 only a few years ago, well after Star Control 2's original release.)

For the second time, yes seriously. People have differerent graphical standards I honestly don't know how this is so hard to understand.

CaptainGyro: snip
I call it controlled ignorance.
That's fantastic vagabond. That comment does absolutley nothing to change my mind about the whole thing though, and I'm not sure why I should take your opinion more importantly than mine.

Farthest_Outpost: I wish I played this a LONG time ago...First time playing

Verdict so far: Hard but well made (Dang Sylandro Probes! can't I have a Shock wave cannon or something!?!?!) I think I might take notes using the star map that came with it

I think Bioware took notes of this game when making Mass Effect
Yea, those probes are like the cliff racers from Morrowind. At least in this game you CAN turn them off, eventually, if you find the right place.

You'll start noticing which ships match up well against what as you play. The earthling cruiser gets kinda owned by the probes, but if you start far enough away you can win the battle with a couple nukes, up close and you're toast. Once you can upgrade the mother ship a little, you can toast those guys in a few shots from a distance, although the spathi are great at taking them down as well since they're both fast and spathi can fire backwards.

Sounds like the 3DO version has a lot more going for it.

Planetary exploration

In the PC version, when you landed on the surface of a planet, you could only see the surface directly around the lander, in a small box in the bottom right corner of the screen. On the 3DO the entire main window was used for this. UQM does it like the 3DO.

Does this mean that in the PC version, you don't get a window that takes up the top half of the screen when you're searching the surface for resources? I cannot imagine how it would be like not being able to see several inches ahead for tectonic spots and lightning on those really inhospitable planets.

I presume you're fully aware of OpenTTD? http://www.openttd.org/en/

Easily my most played game of all time. I must have sunk thousands of hours into it over the years.

Sorry, but You meant to type something like this...
UQM Version Comparison

(Reply to this to see the right way to do it)
Since UQM is open source, maybe GOG could bundle the UQM installer as a free extra for SC1+SC2? This should raise the visibility of UQM project, and potentially attract new contributors?
I was wondering when these titles were going to be added! Now I wonder when Star Flight 1 and 2 will be added. The Sega Genesis port of Start Flight is one of my all time favorite games. It consumed quite a bit of my time for a long while, and I only just bought it a few years ago!

For those that want all the cinematic upgrades the 3DO version can be downloaded (legally) for free. As far as I know it was the most enhanced version.
