Only on GOG, a new game release can bring so many memories from back in the days. So who remembers the times of Pentium MMX?

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/pod_gold]POD Gold also known as Planet of Death is a futuristic racer with a plot. The game takes place in the future on a planet called Io. A mining accident unleashes a deadly virus which threatens the whole planet population. After a massive exodus from the planet, only one seat in the very last rescue spaceship remains. This seat will be taken by the winner of a dangerous race in which you're taking part. Maybe it's not an Oscar winning script but come on, it's a racer :) In POD it's all about speed - you drive one of 16 turbocharged machines through 32 tracks in full 3D environment, fighting for the top spot. When released, POD was the first game making use of the Pentium MMX technology, and later on, one of the titles with 3D acceleration. Based on this POD was often used as an example of what the computers in the late 90's could do. Today you can check the "hi-end technology of the 90's" and have fun while blasting 300 mph through the futuristic tracks for only $5.99.
Wishlisted =)
thanks gog

picchioabbio: Does it work with DosBox ?

timppu: I haven't tried it, but I presume these two Glide wrappers are primarily (or only) for Win9x games with 3Dfx support. I remember hearing that DOSBox would have (integrated?) Glide wrapper for the DOS games which had 3Dfx support (the few that there are, I remember mostly Tomb Raider 1 (with the 3Dfx patch), Whiplash, and a few others).

EDIT: See this:

hope it works fine with DOSBox 0.74

timppu: I don't know why, but now all GoG forum links seem to link to the forum discussion? In order to see them, you'll have to copy paste them manually to your web browser.

GoG, what's up with that?
Cook didn't close a tag in the news post above. We've fixed it.
Damn, that page said Whiplash (3Dfx) doesn't work with that DOSBox 3Dfx patch... :(

This POD discussion reminds me of some other racing game that I think originally appeared for 3Dfx's rival, PowerVR... I don't recall the name now, just remember in its name one 'a' was replaced with a '@' for some reason. I think it originally came with PowerVR 3D cards.

I think they later released the game also for other 3D cards, maybe even Direct3D... I just remember playing a demo which seemed great.

EDIT: I think it was this game:

That I'd love to see on GoG.

For DOS games, there is Glidos:

http://www.glidos.net/

It is not free though, but sure worth the small amount of money the creator is asking for it.
As I am person who loves turn based strategy games this is not must-buy thing for me - I still do have many strategies on my GOG's wishlist and they are priority for me. But I played this game in the past a little so maybe someday in future with a lot of spare money... ;)

I'm sure there was talk of an experimental DOSbox beta that had 3dFX support, a while ago wasn't there?
You may have to download the source, comment some lines back in and compile it yourself or something crazy though - not sure...
I remember when this came out. It was basically an attempt to make MMX look appealing to gamers, even if it wasn't that much of a difference.

Pardon for this question but...what exactly is MMX?

Mega Man X?

Damn, i always want to try this game back in 1997. But with Pentium 133MHz and later upgraded my PC to AMD K6-2 550MHz in early 2000 powered by 2MB S3 Trio 3D and 64MB RAM i could only drool watching my cousin Pentium MMX run this at the fullest.
I was just talking about how much I wanted this in the IRC the other day.

GOG IS WATCHING (and has fast turnaround time) ;).
