Do they exist?

I really have trouble finding one of my games mature.
No, I'm not talking about hentai or porn games.
And NO I'm not talking about games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age which want to be mature but fail in a very teenage way.

And before you start ranting about the word "mature" I meant it in the sense of
games for adults, games which aren't really interesting and appropriate for chidren.

Are there any?

ninjed.
-Planescape: Torment
-King of Dragon Pass
-Sacrifice(appropriate for all ages)
-Sanitarium
-Inquisitor
-Witcher 1 and 2

Will these do ?
I have no mouth and I must scream brought me to this idea of a topic so while I never played it I think maybe it's fine.
Planescape: Torment: Well I think kids back then loved that game, I'm sure. Considering adding a new graphical Engine and first person perspective today's TEENS would love Planescape
King of Dragon Pass is fairy tale putting you in command of your tribe, it's educational and quite interesting and fun for kids as well, so no.
Don't know about Sacrifice wouldn't be you if you hadn't posted it but since you said its appropriate for all ages, it's not what I meant.
Sanitarium I don't know, maybe.
Inquisitor is just trying very hard to be mature but actually I have the feeling it is not, maybe because its broken or something.
Witcher 1 and 2 are trying to be mature for teenagers. Good games, really good games but they are for kids and teens.

I've not played Spec Ops: The Line but Yatzee was making it sound pretty deep on a Zero Punctuation I was watching recently...
Another great series with mature storytelling is the Gabriel Knight trilogy.
The Cat Lady
A teenager is an interesting being. If you're definition of mature is a game a Teenager wouldn't touch, or be mature enough to touch...You're out of luck. Blood, sex, drugs, nudity, doesn't matter to the age of a person... Only how well they can stomach it. At the same time, the more thought provoking games matter more for the intelligence of a person. A game CAN be mature, and still have it's own teenage fanbase. Infact, given the young age of most gamers...

Calling a game like Planescape 'Something kids loved, therefore not mature' is an overly broad assumption, and, yes, by that assumption, there ARE no mature games.

When I think mature, I think consequences, unmitigated mindscrews, ect. Something that makes you think, something that makes you pay for every action. System Shock counts, as does Planescape and 'I have no Mouth'. Teenagers are still going to play them, but hey.

I can think of a few more mature items, but some of them do include sexual themes (Not the main focus of the game, mind. I'm not talking about Hentei or Eroges..), so I'm not sure they qualify.

How insecure can you be to even write that?

I mean... Really, even the fairy tales told at kindergarden may contain wisdom and maturity that most so-called 'mature' works never will.

Indeed. Reading the unedited versions of the old tales give me more shivers than a slash-fic of RedxWolf.

Feixp, It's not about fairy tales with messages behind it.
Most of Grimm's work has more messages for adults in it than for kids, don't even start with this...

And don't start being insulting! Instead read MY definition for "mature" in my first Post:
the word "mature" I meant it in the sense of
games for adults, games which aren't really interesting and appropriate for chidren.
Now for the others: I find Fate of the World probably appropriate as a mature game. But maybe I'm wrong.
It's about ecology, UN politics, education and utimately the fate of world (as you probably have guessed) all topics pretty boring for most kids and it doesn't feature shiny graphics and leaderboards and the usual bells&whistles...

When I was 11, I was reading Sherlock Holmes. So I guess complex stories with logical storyline and conclusion are out of the picture. Your definition is not a definition, it's incredibly subjective, just as your 'not Mass Effect teenage story' bit. I mean, seriously? That's where I got the 'insecurity' from.

Sooo... Civilization?
If your definition of a "mature game" is "something teens are not interested in" then I'm afraid you'll not have much luck in finding such a game. Teens are interested in mature games because of the games being mature. Hell, if I were to define teens I'd say "kids who think they are adults".

Edit: How about "To the Moon"?

If it is a game, at all, there will be teenagers playing it.

Planescape is very much a Mature game. I agree. It was aimed for adults & teens that played D&D, but took a very keen mind to grasp all it had to offer, and dealt with mature topics, like death, albeit in a humorous way at times.

Silent Hill 2 is also for mature players, as noted in the warning you get upon loading the game.

And I would add the MYST series to my list of Mature games. Not because of Gore, or Difficulty, but because of what it represents. Something a lot of teenagers do not want, but more adults do. It focuses on the story in a way that no other series does. And it makes you think. Just to continue to the end of the game, you need to understand the reason the puzzles are there, not just how they work, and often the solutions are not what you think. They bring in an element of strategy that nothing else does. And, to top it off, the world of MYST is very deep. There is always more to explore, even beyond the games.

If that does not meet the criteria of being a "mature" game, then tell us your list.
