You can always wait for the X Superbox to go on sale before buying. It probably went like 3 times on sale for this year alone.
And yeah definitely the X series. I've probably spent close to 5 hours playing X2, X3 and X3:TC, still playing X3TC. Economy, your own factory complexes, trading, dogfighting, owning capital ships and squads of figthers, piracy, you name it, it has it.
