Fever_Discordia: What was the FIRST great point and click though?
As I mentioned above, if we are changing the subject, I would agree with Myst, although many folks forget about 7th guest. (which was release the same year, I believe).

Myst was my first big foray into PC gaming (was all comodore, atari, and nintendo before that). If point and click is the criteria, then I'd probably stick with Myst. If adventure is the criteria... zork?

I still wait for a FPP adventure game that is better or even just as good as Myst 3 and 4 >.<
Probably mentioned, but:

Doom
Civilization
Panzer General
Wizardry I
Space Sims are nowhere dead:

Squadron 42
Star Citizen
Elite: Dangerous
Limit Theory

All incoming.

Fever_Discordia: Maniac Mansion was the first SCUMM game (the MM in SCUMM standing for 'Maniac Mansion') so that probably deserves to at least share Monkey Island's crown...
I agree that MM deserves a milestone in gaming history but isn't the question here 'which game has had the longest reign in its genre'?

Maybe its just me but I've noticed that when people start discussing SCUMM/Lucas Art games, SoMI has the most fond memories/vocal supporters.

Must go and replay Broken Sword again... :)

Why would I? I played a lot of FPP adventures and not a single one was even close to Myst 3 and 4.

I thought you were joking because most Myst fans consider 3 & 4 as being the runts of the franchise. Different developer.

I usually don't care about most fans of whatever ;P

"most fans" were saying Fallout Tactics is shit, Fallout 3 is shit, Age of Empires 3 is shit, Red Alert 3 is shit and I could go on and on and on about great games that were dismissed by "the fans"...

btw. Myst 3 and 4 have almost exact same metascores as Riven.

Grargar: Super Mario Bros 3. Ever since then, platform games have yet to surpass it.
Sonic 3 And Knuckles + Sonic advance 3

I didn't say I agree. I was explaining why I thought you were joking. (I'm only partway thru 4, I've put it on hold until I complete URU Complete Chronicles)

Neobr10: I think COD has taken the multiplayer FPS crown a long time ago.
avatar
keeveek: Nope. Depends how you look at it, but there are many more people playing CS right now than the newest COD.

But the real king seems to be Team Fortress 2 right now. In terms of long-lasting popularity.
Though there are people who actually play the game, and there are people who idle for drops and only participate in the trading game in 3rd party websites.

The latest anti-idle patch should fix a bit of that.
Grand Prix Legends, Falcon 4.

Roman5: Sonic 3 And Knuckles + Sonic advance 3
Super Mario World + Donkey Kong Country + Yoshis Island

All platformers. All very different.. But each in their own way - perfect for what they are! :)

And you don't think they are awesome? :P I love the story in Myst 3, it was a rare occasion when I really felt sympathetic towards the bad guy in the end. And I love the puzzles in those games, most of them perfectly logical, based on mathematics and thinking. Myst IV looked gorgeous, when I first launched it, my jaw dropped on the floor.

And I love them for their FMV with good quality acting (imho)

I never finished Myst and Riven, so maybe they are really better games, but my love for Exile and Revelation lasts for many years and many replays.

Myst 3: Exile = No. I felt disengaged from the story and the puzzles were annoying. Having just played Myst & Riven (in order), Myst 3 felt jarring. I give you that the parts of the game did look nice (especially the start) but graphics aren't everything.

Myst 4: Revelations = Yes. The game is beautiful and the storyline (well the part I have played) is interesting (even if it contradicts Myst 1). I have heard that the storyline goes downhill near the end of the game but.

If you like the FMV & acting more than the storyline, I don't recommend you play Myst & Riven. If, however you appreciate a good storyline more, I highly recommend that you do.
(Especially if you can get your hands on the Myst books - All three are Myst canon and supply most of the background story. I found that the books make the games far more engaging & rewarding to play).
