Licurg: Dune 1 and Emperor are really the only ones I'd buy . Dune 2 is too dated, and I never liked Dune 2000.

XYCat: and what about Cryo's 2001 Dune? :)
Odd... I was always under the impression that it had been canceled before release :/ Don't think I've played it .

The ambitious MMO Strategy Cryo game Dune Generations was cancelled. But before that, Cryo released a stealth game Frank Herbert's Dune on PC and PS2, when Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson published their first dune prequel book House Atreides, Westwood Studios and EA released Emperor Battle for Dune, and the tv series was obviously released.
But FH's Dune - the game - was buggy and I remember compatibility issues with graphic cards back then.

I think that whole operation (all those releases) was a plan to make a Dune revival. But it sadly failed so I believe that Herbert family is reluctant to make the Dune IP coming back outside of books' releases. Sad.

Do yourself a favor and never ever play this game! Trust me and avoid this abomination. If it wasn't a Dune game it would be just a very bad stealth action game. But since it has "Dune" in its title it's a horrendous blasphemy!

Can you imagine? If you manage to get a stealth kill (using a crysknife) you will reclaim some water of your victim. But how? Wouldn't you need a deathstill for that? But wait, it gets better - if you are clumsy and an enemy spots you can't do ANYTHING with your crysknife against him. You can swing it at him all the way you want but you won't leave a single scratch on his body. Nice isn't it?

Oh, and the stealth part itself is absolutely broken. You can, for example, stand next to the door and take a peak to see whether some guards are in the next room. That's the theory. In practice you will get spotted nevertheless. But, hey - why should you bother with this peaking? You can instead stand one or two meters away from the door and manipulate a camera a bit and you will see the whole next room. Nice, isn't it?

Man, it's painful to even talk about this game so... that's it, let's keep pretending that it doesn't exist ;)

Thanks for the warning, that sounds like a real piece of shit :/

Well, that's the case with absolutely all stealthy 3rd person games, isn't it ?

And I paid 79,90 PLN for that shit... It was beginning of May 2003... I still remember this tragic day...

I don't think so ;) Apparently I haven't explained it properly so here it goes: in FHD you can move both, yourself and the camera and none of them can pass through a wall. But! If you stay next to the door you can move your camera and "enter" the next room through the door. And while it's there you can rotate it to get a nice view of the whole room. And before moving somewhere else you have to carefully move you camera out of the room because otherwise it will be trapped there and won't be able to follow you because it can't pass the wall. After a few seconds of spectacular glitches it may eventually reset itself and be at your back. or the game may crash. Actually it may crash anyway, it likes to do so in every possible moment ;)

Oh, ok. I thought it was just aboutt using the 3rd person perspective to peek around the corner while your character doesn't (I do that a lot).

Anyway, I had stayed far from that game merely out of aversion for the graphic style and the gameplay genre. Neither did look dune-y at all, in my eyes.
Yesterday in the evening my friend visited me and he brought back my Emperor CDs. We made ourselves a nice spice beer (it seemed to be most appropriate) and so today I was able to check if the game works. And yes, it does without any problems (still Win7 32bit). I've also checked possible widescreen solutions and found one that require tinkering with registry. It worked but not flawlessly (I used 1366x768) - the game didn't crash or anything but it misaligned building buttons - whenever I clicked any button close to its edge it activated next button. This misalignment was relatively big and playing the game like that was extremely annoying so I went back to native 1024x768 resolution.

The final conclusion is that all Dune games work without any significant problems on my laptop. Sure, it doesn't guarantee that it will work on every computer but at least we may assume it's not one of those games that crash every time you try to run it. So I guess it wouldn't be time consuming for GOG staff to adjust everything. The legal issue on the other hand...
One thing really sucks about the Dune novels, at least the first one. In fact other novels completely overshadow it in this respect. It just doesn't feel right to read it in rainy weather...
