Yesterday, Infinity Ward posted a viral video for Modern Warfare 2 on YouTube. It had some Phillies baseball player comment that "grenades are for pussies" as a PSA, only to be thrown several live grenades, where he yells "OH F**K!" When it fades to black, the message "Fight Against Grenade Spam" pops up. I'm sure all of you can see what the acronym is for that.
Anyway, both a Game Informer writer and freelancer Mitchell Dyer to offense to this and got into a Twitter argument (I can already see some rolling their eyes). Robert Bowling conceded and pulled the video down.
How does this even get green-lighted? Were it any company and a video like this were released, the people in charge of it would get a stern talking to, or worse, fired. It seemed like Modern Warfare 2 was going to be a home run, but they keep making stupid decisions. Who knows how many sales they'll lose?
By the way, Mega64 made a funny video focusing on how every publisher is moving out of the way for Modern Warfare 2:

For every halfway intelligent gamer they turn away they attract in a horde of preteen trogs thinking "LOL FAGS".
It's all about sales and with a game like this you're going to be buying it so you can play it on a crappy unmoderated server against 8 year olds.
I got the impression that, combined with the pot leaf tag, IW was poking fun at the dumber aspects of its community rather than overtly condoning it.
Unfortunately for them, they couldn't have told their joke is a worse way. These kind of things require the right context and a certain amount of finesse to make the intentions of said joke absolutely clear, and IW had neither.
Stay classy, Activision.

That hurt since I laughed at the acronym =(. I personally love using grenades but only when it is necessary, and for a Sniper, it really isn't unless some team of assholes are packed in a room I need to get into. =)
I still wake up in a cold sweat over the spamfest that is "Killhouse".
I don't think players even bother aiming on that map. Lob some grenades as far as possible, then shoot everywhere until you die so you can respawn, rinse a repeat.

Are they TRYING to have their game fail?

At this point I'm starting to think Jack Thompson and every single bitching mother and politician are working with them, side-by-side.

It does seem like someone in the PR department needs to be fired. Immediately.

Gov. Shwarzenegger's "fuck you" to the California legislature
People will always read into things intent and meaning that is not there, but the point is, why didn't Infinity Ward think of that when they produced an ad with obvious acronym in it that has quite a derogatory meaning? I mean some body there had to have noticed it and said, "Hey, do you realize that spells out 'FAGS'?", after all, we all did. If no one there did notice, then their ad guys are even more clueless than anyone should be and need to be fired for sheer stupidity.

Possibly Or Likely I Think It Comes About Laughably Laudable You Can Obstruct Reasonably Rational Events Coming True.
Why is it that every time someone calls someone else on a derogatory statement, somebody always has to call it "political correctness" as if that is somehow worse than the original offense? There is such a thing as just being plain rude and insulting, political correctness has nothing to do with it. This is a case just like that. For example, what if they had used an acronym that spelled out "NIGGER" or "KIKE" or something else equally derogatory, would you be crying "political correctness" if anyone complained about that? I seriously doubt it. So why is a derogatory term about a homosexual any different?
Or they may have consciously released knowing fully well that some people would take offense, possibly drumming up a lot of fuss about it, yet knowing that most people either probably wouldn't care or found it funny enough ( as they'll get the acronym is not aimed at homosexuals in particular ) and thus drum up a lot more news coverage for free.
I seriously doubt its really going to detract sales from the core audience and I wouldnt be surprised that many that got wound up over this probably wouldn't have bought it anyways.
Of course, only sales will tell :) ( or I guess technically they won't.... )
