A great opportunity to mention the movie I had watched only this Sunday and that I would recommend to you, Ivory&Gold, as it might satisfy your pursuit for something romantic (not soapy) and uniquely told, but just as much to everyone else who does not perceive the gorefests as the pinnacle of cinema. The movie is One Day, released in 2011, with Anne Heathaway and Jim Sturgess in lead roles.

A brief summary from IMDB:

After spending the night together on the night of their college graduation Dexter and Em are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives. They are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day.

Not to say too much and thus ruin the experience, it is a story about how significantly the events of one day can influence the rest of our lives. It is a story about affection and how love can be patient and forgiving. It is a story about romance that is not, and yet is. It is not cliché, does not put one at risk of diabetes, and is remarkably well acted.

In its closing moments, it left one of those heavy impacts a well told tale leaves. A low rating on IMDB, only 6.8, doesn't do it justice in my opinion, although low ratings tend to be fairly common with the movies I like.
Can only be Wuthering Heights. The book or the 1970 movie with Timothy Dalton.

Need I say more:)

Fun giveaway, thanks +1

I try my luck with two books: "Endymion" and "The Rise of Endymion" by Dan Simmons.
(In German available as two books in one: http://www.amazon.de/Endymion-Pforten-Auferstehung-Romane-einem/dp/3442242517 )
It is not necessary to read the previous Hyperion books, I actually recommend reading them afterwards if you really want to read them as well.

"Endymion" and "The Rise of Endymion" tell a wonderful love story in a grand science fiction setting. (And there aren't enough well-written, deep and wonderful science fiction love stories out there, right?) While the story leads you through a fantastic universe, intriguing characters it also touches serious topics like the value of (eternal) life and still manages to entertain and thrill you every step of the way.
Imagine a universe where everybody can be immortal if they join the church and enter a symbiotic relationship with a small alien lifeform. A human federation that has broken apart, earth disappeared, planets with human settlers divided by space that suddenly isn't so easy to cross anymore. And in all that Paul Endymion who in many moments isn't really a hero but a whiny nag and who travels the universe with an interesting group of "people" who all seem to know what they are doing, all seem to have goals and a destiny.

Edward Scissorhands! I really like the movie because it's different from others. The love is innocent and in the finale, there is no happy ending, which is true in some real life cases. Great giveaway btw, and good luck to all!

What? Still no mentions of Casablanca? tsk tsk... I'm disappointed with you guys... ;p
Ouch. Few romances work on me.

Casablanca does (for its selflessness). Also the romance in Fisher King functions well (the scene where Williams and Plummer discuss how things will evolve). And, strangely, I believe in the one in Sands of Times. For different aspects, I'm also touched by the couple in Le Secret and the friendship-love-forgiveness-weakness of the trio in Laisse aller c'est une valse (I also adore the in Butch Cassidy, with the absolute sense of confidence in the "stealing your woman" scene). The over-the-top romance of the first half of La vita e bella is also enjoyable. But, if I had to give just one or two titles...

I'd be nasty. And I'd suggest the horribly dark and creepy romance of a movie I adore : Eye of the Needle, with Donald Sutherland and Kate Nelligan, and a music by Miklos Rosza. Or, possibly more intense and despaired : Don't look now, with Sutherland and Julie Christie, as a very tight touching couple, whose bond is illustrated by the Only Good Love Scene Ever in the history of cinema. Both films are magnificent, in their own way. Can't develop because it would near spoilers.

And if I had to name one book : The Plant, by Vassilis Vassilikos. The obsessive, invasive, romance between a young man and a house plant (that he had originally stolen from the garden of a woman he was infatutated with).

-------------

Oh, only one suggestion. Hm. I... hm. Okay, I'm out. Just fleshening it up, because my suggestions are GOOD and must be FOLLOWED for their own sake (sometimes, the "giveaway" context of such threads is limitative for the discussion itself).

Ivory&Gold: All you have to do is recommended me a romantic love story.
This is a truly wonderful film with a very special love story:

"The Notebook" is the best romantic movie I've ever seen. I know that is a subjective thing but I really loved the story. Be careful not to read too much of the wiki article so you don't spoil it for yourself. Be sure to get this or rent it and see for yourself, preferably with someone special watching too.
If you squint, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is pretty damn romantic at times. Also, a great movie. And pretty much the only one where Jim Carrey is tolerable.
Blankets by Thompson :)

My thoughts exactly. With the exception of that silly childhood scene, I even thought his performance was great in this movie. Maybe he's actually a better actor than comedian or clown or whatever it is he's aiming at.

If medium does not matter, then I'd suggest a game right here on GOG: To The Moon.

A really touching story, definitely amongst the very best I've seen in games. It was what I'd call an experience rather than just playing a game. Can't recommend it enough.
The one that comes to mind right one is one that I enjoyed a lot, plus I like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan acting. And that should be "You´ve Got Mail". It´s about a bookshop clerk (Meg Ryan) that has one of those small bookshops, with a small but nice catalog of books, and she really loves it, it´s her life, plus she organizes story book readings for the children on certain days. It´s that kind of magical place.
Then one day a huge bookstore market opens near her place, huge space, huge catalog and by chance of circumstances its manager (Tom Hanks) ends up "meeting" certain bookshop clerk : ) , that´s when things really start..........and that´s as much as I´m willing to tell so as not to spoil anything. It´s a loveable story, surely enough worth watching.

I thought he was great at The Truman Show as well.
