Hm, so to me it sounds sort of like Star Citizen's setup, with a focus on online community features, but still containing a single-player/offline mode.

Does it have offlin because for one he did not say it was an MMORPG he never said MMORPG.

That was what I was thinking, a lot better than I was expecting. It'll be interesting to see if they can pull this off, I hope they focus to make quests and various tasks feel meaningful in the multiplayer environment, that's usually the tipping point that kills it for me.

From the Kickstarter page it says:
"Multiplayer Online Game - which can also be played solo player / offline"

Crosmando: I stayed up to 3AM on Friday to see this?! A fucking MMO?!

I'm going to bed, if any of you gentlemen contribute to this I will be disappointed.
It also has single player offline mode so not all is lost man.

Which means the single-player mode will be a bland and boring experience, because it's being designed with the MMO aspect in mind.

Lol, he still has millions, he lives in a mansion for christsakes, he could easily fund this game out of his own pocket, he just wants to dupe people into people for it for him

Well we just have to wait and see if this achieves its goal.

And if he was just making another WOW clone why would he be going to kickstarter?
Too early for me to say, but here is my personal opinion:

Richard Garriot is a nice person that I think can be trusted. I don't remember the original story, but Ultima 8 and the rest wasn't his fault actually. Too much office politics, I think. Even the developers leave a 'message' ingame if you click on an object that keep changing from cone to cube to sphere.

a) Regarding space tourist. He is a son of an astronaut that fully focus into science and computer science to follow his father footstep, but stopped in his track due to his eye situation. So if he want to spend his life income to achieve that dream, it was his right, he earned all those income.

b) He was also screwed, not just us. Anyone remember the 'selling stock' thing that happened while he was in space? Thank god he won in court for that one, AFAIK.

c) He was right about today state of game. And it was a good thing for him to return to the root.

d) He is a pioneer, then again, he is astronaut wannabe. A lot of his game always push the then PC limitation, always require the latest and the best.

e) Even in U6, you can actually did a lot of thing in-game, like making bread(?) and many others. When they said they create worlds, THEY ARE.

Yes, he is asking for 1 million. But please understand the team he is hiring to get the job done.

But more importantly, he DOESN'T need the money for development, he just want to gauge early sale. And I can't blame him. What is the point of spending 1 million to develop the next ultima in spirit if all people want is another generic shooter or generic whatever-Run from Zynga?

So this is how he gauge the market, and 1 million is the decided -early sale- for him to think it worth to develop it. Ever hear what other developer talks about PS4? About cost of development and how many sale needed to break even?

Asking for 1 million in kickstarter is not about the money, its about gauging the market if people still care about his brand. And kickstarter is the next 'viral' thing. Everybody want the most amount at the shortest time. And all the project will be talked about by a lot of portals.

I think he can be trusted. The result might not be your cup of tea, but personally, I think that Richard Garriot is a gameplay scientist. He deserved all the awards he won... I'll see which portion that I can apply at the kickstarter.

$70,000 already damn half in hour ago it was at $5,000.
Really bad pledges. 100$ just to get digital artbook and soundtrack?

Also, I really dislike the vague Kickstarter projects. "We're going to do a revolutionary RPG. How, you ask? By doing everything better, of course. Now give me the money!" I've definitly seen too much of them.

But are they done by Richard Garriot? I'm not asking you to pledge blindly, but who is Richard Garriot to you?

I know who he is to me, what he bring to my life, and I think I will pledge. I have one month to think about it and see if I can get my financials in order.

Not completely uninteresting. But do I understand the pledges right? I have to pay additional $60 dollars just to get the runic language translation, the soundtrack and the artbook. Seems highly overpriced to me.
