DrIstvaan: Hmmm. I think "you cannot overestimate" means it's so large that no matter what you guess, it won't be over the actual value. And "you cannot underestimate" means it's so little you can say any low value, it'll still be over the actual value.
Is it not so?

JudasIscariot: Hmmm
"Hype - where you cannot underestimate the intelligence of mankind nor overestimate the power of its stupidity."
Hmmm... is that better?? Was trying to make a witty remark and I failed.
/goes back to reading Oscar Wilde...

Much better, IMO, as now it says the intelligence of mankind is very low and that the power of stupidity is infinite.
(A witty remark it is, I understood what you meant to say even for the first time, that's why I asked :-).)

Thanks !! ...although I need to eat another dictionary it seems since I can't get my underestimate and overestimate placed properly

Damn! I knew I missed something!
Hype has done more to turn me off than to interest me. Any time I see big annoying flash ads with sound, excessive TV advertising and crap like that, it makes me slightly less interested in the product each time. For example I won't be playing that "free" evony game or seeing that new gi joe movie because of the amount of my bandwidth their flash shit has wasted
People are generally susceptible to repetition of a lie, its how political dirt gains a foothold, how people think angelina jolie is hot when she's a freak with a weird face and why endless generic boy bands are the most amazing thing to happen to happen to music since last teusday. If people hear things enough, they'll accept it as fact regardless of the sheer level of obvious bullshit.

Hype doesn't affect me one way or the other - it's just not relevant. It's a lot of noise.
Dunno... I think some hypes can be justified, especially if it's backed up by gameplay videos or demos. Of course, on the other hand we got "John Romero's going to make you his bitch." :|

DrIstvaan: They say it is THE SINGLE most awaited game, that it is such a great title that everyone will think it was well worth the wait, and that they'd really like to tell us what it will be, but they can't yet, blah blah...

But Duke Nukem Forever was canceled...

To be fair, most gamers became very skeptical of DNF. When it was cancelled, there was more "See? Told you so" than there was "WHAT? OH GOD THE MESSIAH IS GONE"
Hype works and is good when the product is good and groundbreakingly original. The problem is producers use it to sell their unoriginal crappy products too and people have learnt to associate hype with disappointment.

I wonder how stupid he felt when it utterly bombed.
Hype does nothing but turn me off a title. I know games (or products of any kind) need some promotion, but the amount of hype we get on some titles is just plain annoying and off-putting.
Hype is a pretty strong driving force for initial sales, prior to the availability of reviews for people to base their purchasing decisions on. And as long as it continues to be effective we'll continue to see it used.
