I'm not so sure I found GOG, it feels more like GOG found me.
It was an odd time for me because even though more and more games were being released that I was interested in, I found that I was buying fewer and fewer titles. Some like Aliens vs Predator and Metro 2033 were getting a lot of buzz, but they required me to create a Steam account and I had already decided against that when Half-Life 2 was released. "There are plenty of other games out there" I said. Sure I really wanted to continue the story of Gordon Freeman, also Left for Dead sounded cool plus folks were going on about this thing called Portal. But they were just games and I didn't need them. Besides, there was finally a new Duke Nukem game about to be released and a new Fallout game being made by many of the old Black Isle guys. That is where I would focus, except these games too were Steam only. It got to the point where I would go to the store and grab an armload of games, ignore the titles, and just read the system requirements. Anything that said Steam I threw to the ground and was left trying to decide between Nancy Drew and the Haunted Mansion or Dora the Explorers Math Adventures. I thought to myself that there must be a better way to play the games I wanted to play, so out of desperation I Googled Steam Alternative and the first link was to something called GOG.com.
