2011 has been a fantastic year for GOG.com, let's make it even better and make the last push to achieve the 6 million unique downloaded games milestone.

During our presentation at the CD Projekt Fall 2011 Conference we've shared some numbers that show how successful this year was for GOG.com, all that was possible thanks to you - our great community. One of the big milestones we'd like to celebrate with you is the 6 million unique downloaded games! Help us achieve this number and we'll launch a time-limited special offer for all GOG.com users!

Note that when we say "unique games downloaded," that means redownloading games that you have already downloaded before won't increment the counter.

When the counter on the main page of the website hits 6 million, two exciting things will happen. First off, the lucky user who downloaded our 6 millionth unique game will receive everything that's currently in the catalog, absolutely free! Secondly, everyone who has an account on GOG.com will be able to download Broken Sword: Shadow of The Templars Director’s Cut for free, thanks to Sir Charles Cecil and Revolution Software. The offer will be valid only for 48 hours starting from hitting the milestone, so be sure to check GOG regularly or follow us on and [url=https://www.facebook.com/gogcom]Facebook. Let's get cracking to unlock this achievement as soon as possible - it's all in your hands now!
It's really a cool move from Revolution again to give the Broken Sword 1 pack away for free as a birthday gift for gog. If you don't have. I think the pack is really a good way to get into adventure games. I really appreciate that after some users asked them if they also can release the original Broken Sword they added it to the remake for free.

Fujek: That gets me to wonder how you're going to see who initiated the concrete 6 millionth download if you can not even generate the number on the fly.
Funny mystical magic you're yielding there ;)
My guess is this: When the website counter (which is very obviously way too regular to be connected to actual, real downloads) reaches 6M, the guys at GOG will sit together, look at the customers which are currently downloading stuff, and choose the one with the best looking female avatar to win the lottery. ;)

Which I would be perfectly okay with, btw. I'm happy about the free game I'll get, and I'm happy for the one person who'll get a lot of games. I don't expect the way how this person is determined to be 100% accurate, nor do I think it needs to be. I see the whole event as a bit of fun with a guaranteed free game for everyone who keeps checking the counter. There's no way I'd see myself arguing against that. :)
I think it's great that GOG have reached 6 million downloads, that's great news.

Maybe it will show the digital games download industry that if they offer games DRM free, at decent prices, then people will pay for them.

Don't get me wrong, I don't condone torrent pirate activities at all, I think it's theft and a disgrace, but we all know the argument (paying customers have to put up with DRM a lot of the time and pay for the 'privalidge', while pirates get it free, and DRM free.

Well done GOG. Maybe you can put the same business model into a GNG.com (Great New Games.com!!).

I love the layout, the community and think GOG has it all just absolutely spot on.

We have a log of all downloads that happened from the begging of gog.com, so after th 6th millionth download occurs we will be able to go back and get that users account details. The same way that now we can see who was the 4th millionth downloader or the 1st millionth downloader.
Hi.

I have only 2 games left o download and try to win the whole gog.com catalog.
Could someone please tell me when would be the "best chance" time to download them?
For example at 5.999.990 I would start the first download, stop it, and at 5.999.997 start the second one.
I read somewhere in the thread that the counter is delayed a couple seconds...

Thanks.

The best chance to get the 6 millionth download is right after the 5.999.999th one. The probability to be 6 millionth is 1, according to my calculations. If you're talking about the count in the counter thing on the front page, my guess is that you're best off picking an arbitrary number that's somewhat close, like... a few hundred or something before the 6M mark, and hoping you ride the "this is the best time to download!" wave better (luck stat of 10 required) than all the rest (possibly quite many) people who are trying to find the "best chance". My guess is that after the counter starts reaching 6M, there are going to be A LOT of people who start downloading suddenly, in a very short period of time.

Without knowing how many people like that there are, what they consider the optimal moment, and the precision of the counter, I'd say it's quite impossible to even approximate the "best chance". Just take a wild guess.
What I want to know is, what happens when that download counter hits 9.999.999, and beyond? Does it just start from 0000000 again, or does GoG crash and die, spewing games all over the place or something? Could be just as serious as the 2kY bug.

Taleroth: I'm in that position as well. As a sign of my sheer indignant outrage, I will post a frowny face.

...
I can't bring myself to do it.

TheEnigmaticT: As a result of the fact that Broken Sword is a well-known franchise, it has already sold pretty well, so we would have had to negotiate two completely seperate giveaways to cover all of the people who already own the game. Not all of our partners are as awesome as Revolution Software, who was kind enough to say, "Sure, you can give that game away for 48 hours." We wanted to make sure to reward them by keeping attention on them for that cool move, so we can't give away a second game to all of you guys who are already owners of BS1.

Sorry about that!
Nah nah, its fine. Just that normally you do offer a replacement when I dont need it. So I
was meirly curious. :p

Part of me wants to say "well I wouldnt mind one of the other two broken sword games" >_> but i know that lots of people would already have those. Ive bought plenty of games on GOG, and gotten plenty free. I'm sure broken sword wont be the last free game released, heck, im still hoping for one during the birthday celebration. Frankly, I am just obscenely happy about how good of a company CD Project and GOG are.

That's of no concern whatsoever because once The Counter reaches 6,666,666, the world as we know it will cease to exist. Hidden algorithms in the downloaded games will activate and will start to take over reality, transforming it to the reality of the games. which - depending on the games one owns - may or may not be quite bloody. However, in any case, this future reality will be absolutely DRM-free! :)

It would be kind of cool if you could notify the Pi millionth customer, even without any prize attached, because it's kind of cool to know you had an interesting download number.

It's going to be hard, because I bet that plenty of people are going to initiate several downloads concurrently from different computers.

I'm downloading some games I purchased last month but didn't download yet, to see if that helps. ;-)

What, the 6th millionth downloader will receive all GOGs?

When GOG reaches "OVER 9000000!" it'll become all-powerful and in mere moments consume Steam, Direct2Drive, Gamersgate, Impulse, Origin, Apple App Store, Microsoft Marketplace, and Android Market, and immediately purge their entire libraries of DRM.

The download counter will also cease to work, it'll spew out a new random number for each download instead of simply incrementing. It will also remove all logs and backups thereof (even offline ones such as on tape, disconnected harddrives, printouts, or read-only media), as well as start to defy any and all attempts at future logging so as to not give us a chance to estimate how many downloads have occurred.

All hail TAC (The Almighty Counter)!
