Not much of a Quake fan, since I got introduced to Unreal Tournament first and never let go.
This is not exactly my favorite memory. On the contrary, it's probably the most cowardly way I have ever beaten a game and the shame of it makes me remember it quite vividly. It'll probably make you want overlook my entry.
I was on the last map of the single player campaign of UT2k4, battling the Unreal Tournament champion, Xan Kriegor, a robot too fast and too deadly for my puny skills. I kept getting my ass kicked quite handily and nothing I did worked. Whenever I had a small lead, Xan would quickly surpass it the moment he killed me once and left me running around with my pea shooter while he had all the shields and the best weapons up the wazoo.
That was until I figured out we were playing on a spaceship and if you got outside, the gravity would be lower and if I managed to shoot Kriegor off the ship with a single shot, he'd fall to his death and I'd be given the kill.
The ship had the shock rifle outside on top. The shock rifle is known for shooting a beam that hits instantly and while it doesn't make too much damage, it packs a punch and pushes it's victims backwards. The perfect weapon for hitting Kriegor when he was jumping in mid air, regardless of shields. I'd been playing that scenario too many times for me to care about winning fair and square, so I started the scenario again, headed over to the top of the ship, picked up the shock rifle and camped the area like a pussy, hearing Xan picking everything up inside the ship. When he managed to get to where I was, I shot him and saw him disappear, reading the message that I had killed him seconds later.
Kriegor took his sweet time to pop his head back up again and that was to my benefit. The countdown was still running and I kept my eyes on it as much as I did on the surface of the ship, waiting for him to show up. When he did, the cold depths of space embraced him again as my shock rifle shot pushed him to his demise.
Two to zero. The countdown kept going and I was starting to believe I was going to win at last! Kriegor was still running around in the ship and when he popped up his head again, i shot him... and missed! Mutherfucker die! die! die! Kriegor managed to get closer and further apart from the edge, so even if I hit him, he didn't fall off the ship. He shot me with his rocket launcher and then it was me getting blown to bits to the cold void of deep space.
I respawned with my pea shooter inside the ship and Kriegor was on his way, full shields, full weapons and full ammo! I started running around like a yellow pusilanimous chicken, the countdown was almost over, the score was 2 to 1 and if Kriegor killed me again, it'd go into overtime! I'm running on the game and screaming in real life as rockets start flying past me and exploding to my sides, my health starts dropping and I hear his weapon shooting behind me aaaand....!
The game stops! The countdown is over! Whenever an Unreal Tournament match finishes, the camera focuses on a paused shot of the winner and there I was! Running like a pissed-in-his-pants coward with Kriegor shooting behind me... at me...
... at the new Unreal Tournament CHAMPION!
I've never felt more ashamed of winning a game in my life, but hey, like Dominic Toretto would say on the Fast and the Furious... Winning's winning.
