You, dear GOGgers, were the referees. Now, the time has come for the grand finale! We know who won, and who did not. justanoldgamer: Unreal games are made with dead puppies.
That's what makes them so good! :D

undeadcow: How different is Heroes of Might and Magic II from HOMM III? Would it be fair to say they are similar enough to consider them levels packs within the same game engine? I have HOMM III; are there any reasons HOMM II would also be an essential release to nab? Thanks in advance for any feedback.
I'll just copy what I wrote on the HOMM forum:

HoMM 1 it's a much simplified HoMM 2. The same cartoonish graphics, but only 4 towns/races: Knight, Barbarian, Sorceress and Warlock. Only primary skills (Attack, Defense, Power Spell and Knowledge). No secondary skills (Leadership, Logistics and such). I haven't played it much, and perhaps if I had played it first and during it's time I would have loved it more.

HoMM 2 retains the Homm 1 parts but improves most of them. The graphics are similar, a charming cartoon style. The soundtrack is much better. The most important updates that make HoMM 2 great are: the secondary skills, the 2 new races, the creatures upgrades.
There are 6 races/towns now. 2 new races: Necromancer and Wizard. The original 4 races from HoMM 1 are quite the same, including their stats, only some minor aspectual changes. But now some creatures can be upgraded.
Heroes can learn secondary skills, there are 14 in total, each having 3 levels: Basic, Advanced and Expert.
Lots of new spells, artifacts, map buildings. The battlefield is larger.

HoMM 3 is my favourite. Like many 2D titles, its graphics are still enjoyable today. It has:
- 8 towns/races (9 with Conflux, added on the Armaggedon Blade expansion).
- each town has 7 tier creatures (instead of 6 in Homm 1 and 2). Every creature can be upgraded once.
- each hero has 7 slots for creatures so all 7 type of troops from a town can be used during a fight
- more spells, secondary skills, artifacts, map buildings. Some artifacts can be combined for a bonus effect.
- underground level was added
- the "WAIT" button during the fight gives more tactical options
- the 4 magic schools were added as secondary skills: Earth, Air, Water and Fire Magic. Each spell belongs now to one of the magic schools.
- the flying troops have no longer unlimited range. Their range is limited by their speed.
- all towns are very balanced now. Personally I consider Castle to be a little better and Inferno a little weaker than the others.
- lots of other changes.

In HoMM 3 some creatures were moved from a town to other. Some creatures aren't available anymore.
The hand-drawn cartoony graphic is replaced by pre-rendered art.

I don't know what "nab"means but many people say that Heroes 2 is better than 3. They are similar enough, but I wouldn't consider them levels packs within the same game engine.

Thank you for the impressions; I'll grab HOMM II. I appreciate it.
One question. Im not really into rpgs but since the Witcher franchise is quite cheap at the moment I would like to know which one would you recommend me to to buy? I don't know the series so im in total darkness about it.

The second one is in my opinion much better. You can see that they learned from the first one. Combat is more fun, story is very high level and there is less repetition. In parts it is like an interactive movie. Also graphics is better. Only downside - it needs a modern computer!

So I would recommend Witcher2 any day unless your computer is not up to it.

Well I had quite a similar system with a bit worse graphics card when I played WItcher 2 (last year) and I had to severly reduce graphics quality (still very good, if you don't know what you miss, you don't miss it) to be able to get at least 30 fps. Most effective was reducing the resolution: I had to play effectively on 1200x900! :(

So you will definitely be able to play it but maybe have to reduce effective screen resolution.

Very handy came the fps display tool: http://www.fraps.com/

It's just a steal with such pricing + DRM-free = no excuses for piracy! I bought all games from a promo list and voted for Unreal =) Thank you!
