kiva: Almost forgot. I started playing this game http://np.ironhelmet.com/ neptunes pride. Only in my first game but it has been fun so far. Maybe we can get a gog game going.

I've always wanted to try Neptune's Pride. Count me in if anyone else from GOG wants to play.

StealthKnight: Silent storm, Silent Storm sentinels and Hammer and Sickle are good ones. You control individual soldiers instead of tanks and platoons. Hammer and Sickle has an rpg like story where what you do will affect what happens in the story.

This. That game series is awesome. I wish i could buy it somewhere.
Not modern, but if you haven't played them yet - do search for the Battle Isle series [with Battle Isle 2 being my favourite].
Disciples 2 is still the best I think (sorry heroes fans :P).

Reading this thread, I installed it back (from abandonware sites, BUT I bought it back then and lost the CD - I still got the manual, so I don't feel guilty). It aged poorly. The AI is more then crappy.
BI 3 aged a tad better, due to AI still being extremely poor, but a bit better (still unable to do any landing, though).

Have you tried this? It should have better AI.

I haven't played it for awhile. Not a bad game, but with one big problem...the further the game goers, the less 'casual' the game becomes. Suddenly, micomanagement of fleets (of which you have many) between planets (again, many) and attacks becomes more and more critical. It goes from something you check on a couple of times a day to something you check on hourly.

Actually one of my first games on a computer was History Line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_Line) Its like a predecessor of Battle Isle but with all the fun already built in. I especially like the scenarios with long front lines.

I don't object to poor graphics, but no game should be worse than what a game looked like when I was 10 or 12 y.o. (that is 15 years ago).

Trilarion: Hi,
I am a big fan of strategy games especially if they are turn based. Then I can take my own time, think and decide what I am doing next. Real time with a pause function that allows giving orders during the pauses is also ok.
Now I ask if you know any good strategy, preferably DRM free, open source or with a disc check. They can be commercial, old or new, but should not require online activation and should be available somehow. The graphics and sound quality is not really important, but the gameplay should be catchy.
Good examples are Master of Orion 1-2, Civilization 1-4, Colonization, Alpha Centaury, Panzer General, X-Com, Hearts of Iron, Battle for Wesnoth...
The number of good turn based strategy games in the last years has been really small. But maybe there are others out there which I am not aware of, modern ones, that you know and like? Please give me a hint about them!

The Battle for Wesnoth. The game is free for PC (there's a version for iPhone, but you need to pay). I reccomend you give it a try, maybe it's the type of game you're looking for.
He actually already mentioned Wesnoth.
Although, it does need mentioning often, because it is awesome.
Oh I'll be damned if I don't mention this again (I do it for every TBS thread hehe)

Also If any one has a PS3 they should check out Valkyria Chronicles. It should be quite cheap to get at less than $20.

That'd be 690 :)
If you need help, just ask around the lobby. Friendliest community I've ever been in. What's your username? Mayhaps I can join you. I haven't resubscribed, but that's only because I don't want to be distracted from my homework on hand. Last semester I almost royally messed up because I played too much Darkwind lol.
