This isn't out yet (and probably wont be until next year), but it's worth a mention: Dead State.
It's a turn based strategy / RPG set in a zombie apocalypse. What's cool, is it's not a hectic action game like so many other zombie games. It's focused on surviving. You've got to build up your base, find food and scavenge for other useful items. You also play the role of a leader.
I'm hoping it's going to be DRM free. I'm mailing the authors now infact to request that they don't ruin it with DRM. I'm the same as you - I don't mind a disk check to much; although it would be better without one.

I'm shocked that some people have been mentioning Lords of Magic, but no-one has mentioned the far superior Lords of the Realm 2. In my opinion one of the most addictive turn based strategy games ever.

Warlords 3: Reign of Heroes and Warlords 3: DLR are almost impossible to acquire now. I spent a year tracking down a copy of DLR. Unfortunately they don't run on Windows XP or Windows 7 too well.
I'd love to see them fixed and published here on GOG.
The only way to run them properly nowadays is through XP on VirtualBox & WineD3D or on an actual Win95/98 machine.
Great games, hours of wasted time!
