I've managed to get quite a collection of old classics of games from GOG over the years but I can't say that they have all been what I had hoped for. Some games just don't age well. So what games do you think are truly enjoyable today and not only worth playing from a "historic" point of view.

I'd say that planescape torment, gothic, system shock 2 and even fallout 1 gave me a blast while playing them just 1, 2 years ago for the first time. Longest journey is one of the best games I've ver played.

Evil Genius and Giants: Citizen Kabuto still hold up well for me.
Blood
Carmageddon
Duke3D
Shadow Warrior
Sacrifice . Buy.
Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3. 15 years old and they still look good, thing that I can not say about some of the indie games that come out today.

You say you played Gothic1 2 years ago and it gave you a blast?
I've only played 2 and 3, hmmm, perhaps I should give it a chance.

rayman 2
Age of Wonders - check out the subforum too see how many PBEM games are ongoing - it's a very strong proof that the game aged really well.
Disciples - I was very surprised by this game. There are some minor issues and flaws here but the gameplay is really great.
MDK - if only you change the controls to modern standards then the game is absolutely fabulous. Perfect when you are stressed.
Patrician 3 - pretty complex economic game.
Populous - The Beginning - Sunama! Taka! Voonaga!
Pharaoh and Zeus - almost perfect city builders
RollerCoaster Tycoon series
Theme Hospital

The last two don't need any comment IMHO ;)
I have recently played Gabriel Knight 2 for the first time (2010, I think) and despite how aged it looks, the game was engaging. I didn't feel like I had to endure bad controls which is something I sadly can't say about Dune 2 I used to play a lot as a kid.
Beyond Good and Evil and Anachronox still hold up well today.

Dune 2 has sadly been rendered unplayable by time, because everyone is now used to much better control schemes. Playing the game today feels so awkward and cumbersome that it isn't worth the bother. It's a pity, because apart from the horrible controls it's a great RTS, and could be said to be the first of the modern RTS games, an honor which most people unfortunately think belongs to Command and Conquer.

I recently played Might and Magic I for the first time. I know that many people have problems with it, because of the old-school graphics and mechanics, but I had a really good time with it and so I would say that it aged very well.

I agree. The game is fantastic RTS however the obsolete controls effectively killed it. By the way. there is a browser version.
Lord of the Realms 2. Still my favorite TBS.
Icewind Dale series. The graphics are still lovely, the plot is still predictable-but-done-well, they still feel exactly like a D&D adventure.
I've also been having fun with the first 2 Broken Sword games. But I installed ScummVM on my tablet and have been playing them there, so it's definitely not a typical PC experience.

Now I'm wondering how the Amazing Machine series held up. Off to go find out!

Yeah do that, hated the third one and could never make myself finish the second one even if i've tried a hundred times. The first one is smaller, more managable and has a GREAT setting in my opinion.
