I'm playing now Outcast, and I don't know if some would agree, but even though old 3D don't age very well (old 2D ages well better), there is something, in the game, the world. It's the atmosphere, the music, the artistic sense that make this game great, even now. I find it fascinating.

The One game that aged incredibly well is Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - it's incredible how well crafted this game is.

Ironically the games that aged the worst are the Might and Magic series. I started playing World of Xeen and really couldn't. I'm still impressed how people managed to do that back in the day.

Other notable games: The pro-pinball series and Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2

Let's see, of what I own and have played:

Beyond Good and Evil

Serious Sam: Second Encounter
Rayman 2 (aside from the very difficult ending)
Far Cry (had to use cheats 1/3 of the way through, though)
Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project
Beneath a Steel Sky (needed a walkthrough, though)

Thief GOLD and Thief II. Despite having problems with these games, I found them to be quite enjoyable.

Commandos Behind Enemy Lines and Commandos 2. I love both of these games as much today (if not more) than I did when I first played them many years ago.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto. It's fun, it's humorous, and it's challenging in a good way (except, perhaps, the racing levels, though I didn't find them to be too bad).

Arcanum. Granted, this is based mostly on the "enjoyable today" part of the topic title, because graphically the game hasn't aged as gracefully as others (though apparently, if some reviews are to be believed, Arcanum didn't look good when it was released). Still, it maintains a certain aesthetic charm and the gameplay is quite enjoyable.

Broken Sword. I'm not too big on adventure games because far too often they are too difficult for me, but despite needing to consult a walkthrough a couple times, I was able to make it through the bulk of this game on my own. I also really like the graphics and animation in this game. I can't say why, but there's something charming about it.

Beneath a Steel Sky. Pretty much the same reasons as Broken Sword.

haha wow that was basically the whole GOG catalogue:P A lot of people think that Giants: citizen kabuto and thief 1 have aged well, I practically HATE those games, thief might have been a pioneere in the stealh-genre but boy does it feel obsolete and antique. Giants was just meaningless to me. Tried out clive barkeres undying yesterday, didn't do it for me, nothing there that hasnät been done a thousand times better according to me. Wow, I do feel negative today, but at least I can second Deus ex - one of the top 5 games i've ever played probably and my first time through it was 2 years ago!

Besides Deus Ex, are there any other older GOG games that have aged well, in your opinion?

I know that it's not a popular opinion, but I think Deus Ex was crap. I get why people like it - the arguments are sound - but I can't force myself to like it either.

So there we go, I contested that. Any others?

Never got into it either, in spite of being a System Shock fanatic.

I'll also take exception and say that Undying actually did bring new things to the table at the time. The scrying feature for one was brilliantly horrifying in the right places. And the avoidance of standard spells and weapons was refreshing as well.

I'll admit that the game was much better if you read all the supporting material that went with it, which fleshed out the family and the mythos. So it could be argued that the game doesn't stand on its own as well without that. But seeing as it was designed by someone who is foremost a writer, it's a price worth paying for admission into that particular world.

The thread seems to have taken on a different direction. :D Since we are headed that way I'll throw out Alpha Centauri. In defense of the game, the reason I hate it very well could be that I'm not very smart as opposed to my more popular excuse, "It hasn't aged well."

On the "new subject", there are way too many games I tried and didn't like nor understood all the fuss about. Divine Divinity comes to mind, since it was the most recent one. You can even watch a whole thread of my ranting on the game's sub-forum here on GOG.

Didn't like Deux Ex all that much; I have a really huge problem with early 3D games. I watched them go from 2D to 3D and never got what everyone was so excited about... we went from video games that almost looked like playable cartoons to blocky 3D pseudo-realistic crap. And Deus Ex wasn't even an early 3D game. I'm one of those guys that places gameplay and setting above graphics, but when the art direction sucks so bad that not even the gameplay nor the story can make me get past it, there's not much I can do. I love Deus Ex: Invisible War, but the first one... way too ugly.

Heed this man's words! Few things in this world, at least in the gaming world, I would want more than a new first playthrough of Planescape Torment. If anybody have one of those Men in Black memory wipers, send me a PM :)
