bill1701a: Reaver, you represent GOG well. "Game didn't work? Too bad. Move over, there's another sucker right behind you."
My post is directed more at your attitude than the issues you are having.

From what ive read of your posts you seem to expect things handed to you with a silver spoon, there are literally thousands of hardware and software configurations that people use, just cause you lucked out for whatever reason. While I admit that I skimmed the last 1/4 of the topic cause of what appeared to be your self entitled attitude people were trying to help you and your response was basically "i downloaded it and installed it im not doing anything else it should just work"

Life is not like that, sometime things dont work out of the box, instead of refusing to pull your finger out and try to actually get the game working you might try the solutions some people have advised which judging by your most recent post you may have started to do.

As for the "sucker" comment this is untrue. as pointed out everyone that has replied is a GoG customer apart from 1 person who is a staff member. My comment was more along the lines of if your going to be an ass and refuse to even try but instead hit the forums and cry like a bitch ignoring help offered and just repeating your self entitled drivel we can live without you.

bill1701a: Last post. Thanks to everyone who tried to help. I did try these "fixes" to no avail. And, no, I don't know how to proceed when a game can't find a file it says it needs, and I've installed every update to my Win 7, video & audio drivers, and DirectX that I can find. I didn't write the game or Windows. I'm just a user who long ago gave up loading HIMEM.sys. Thanks to all who tried to help, and to those who don't give a shit, you are fine examples of the way customer service is going nowadays. So long.
Do not give up:
Copy the game on a flash device and try it on a friends PC.
Oh, and just a bit of personal interest:
Could you please post a pic of the error you got?
as Reaver894 said:don't let the door hit you on your way out.
please man,cut the attitude.people were actually trying to help you and what do you do?dismiss the help of the community and being an asshole to the other users.so long and please never return.

bill1701a: . . .
If it has not already been suggested try downloading / installing DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtimes (June 2010).

Some older games cannot find the the required DirectX 9 dll's on a Win 7 box. Installing the runtimes will fix the problem if it's the DirectX runtime files that are missing. I have had to do this on several Win 7 boxes.

Edit: I would uninstall the game prior to installing the runtime package. Be sure to install the runtime as an admin.

On the new install be sure to:

a) right click the setup.exe and click "Run as administrator" in the resulting dialog.

b) on the first screen of the GOG installer, click the "Options" button in the lower left corner. Point the install to a directory outside of Program Files. I use C:\Games but any directory name and location not in the Program Files directory will do. I would suggest creating the directory before you start the install.

c) After installing the game and before running it, right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and checkmark "Run this program as an administrator" I also check "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition" as well.

Try starting the game . . .

If the game still won't run, your firewall may be the problem. Some firewalls with throw up a dialog to "Allow" a file to run. This may be the problem if, when you start the game, it just stops on a load screen or a black screen and loads no further.

Comodo in particular does this and sometimes an AV program will as well. Some games, especially older games, will block the request from showing and the game will not run. ALT-Tabbing out of the game will sometimes let you see the requests. Click allow for each request and it should not ask you again. There may be several "allow" requests on first run so ALT-Tab out each time the loading stops. It is often easier to mark the game exe as a trusted program in your firewall prior to running the game.

A quick way to determine if it is the firewall or AV stopping the game is to disconnect from the internet and disable the firewall and AV programs. If the game runs, stop it and enable the AV program, if it runs, stop it and enable the firewall. Once you determine which program it is, make the games exe a trusted file in the blocking program. Enable both prior to reconnecting to the internet.

I have no further suggestions for you other than to maybe . . . give this community a chance to help you if you have a problem. Check the game forums for a solution and post your problem there. If all else fails open a help ticket with GOG support.

Relax he's gone. The good news is I got him to buy that "GOG doesn't store credit card info" story so I say we go shopping! :D

This needs to be reinforced to people like the OP: for all of its strengths, one of the issues that PC gamers needs to face is that with the endless sets of different configurations and hardware/software combinations out there, there are bound to be games which won't work on your system for whatever reason, be they bad drivers, incompatible drivers, missing dependencies, buggy code...the list goes on and on.

GOG isn't perfect, but their support is very good, having used them many times in the past, and the community on the whole, is very good with providing additional support.

However, I don't think it's especially fair to throw the whole site, community and all, under the bus just because one or two games didn't work right out of the box, and you weren't handed a solution on a silver platter.

And this is coming from a "sucker" who's ended up using GOG for essentially all of his gaming needs, and doesn't even run Windows in the first place.
